The first shoe release from Austin, Texas–based HELM, the Benson derby boot transitions from dressy to casual occasions like a champ. It features a rich, lustrous suede upper in your choice of black satin or Horween® mushroom suede, with a storm welt and an oil-treated, water-resistant sole Read More
Update after 3 months: These have been a pleasant surprise - they broke in faster than expected, and look better in pants than floating in space on white background (as one might expect). I do feel that HELM basically cut the top off a boot, as opposed to making a shoe, but they are comfortable now and I think they will probably outlast (HA!) my other shoes of this style.
JonasHeinemanGood to know. I'll be keen to get this in black if it drops again.
I bought Helm Philips 2.0 and it has been great!
Please bring this drop back.
Hi All - we've received some feedback there is difficulty inserting your foot into the opening of the shoe. We've reached out to the manufacturer to raise these concerns and they've confirmed that the shoe will soften with use and there is expected difficulty when the shoes are new. Please reach out to our CS team if you continue to have issues and/or you did not receive the shoehorn with your purchased pair.
Anyone else missing the shoehorn? I've contacted support to let them know that I didn't get mine, if it turns out the whole group was affected they will take care of us all together. It's the weekend now so prob won't have new until Monday...
I just received mine in black. Super heavy, thick leather sole would probably withstand IED blast. These will take some time to break in. But I love these shoes, they represent OLD SCHOOL craftsmanship. None of this pre-molded Vibram rubber soles found on most buck oxfords. The beauty of these shoes is in the simplicity of the design.
I have never owned a pair of Helm Boots before, nor had I heard of the company prior to seeing this drop. But I must say that I am very pleased with this product, so far as first impressions go. Shoes were delivered relatively quickly, so far as Massdrop ordering goes, so I like the fact that Helm had these at the ready, prepared to ship.
The embossed imprint on the inside sole [see photo]:
"Any activity becomes creative when the doer cares about doing it right or better."
I cannot make out the name or initials of the attribution, but I presume it is the company's founder. I like it.

I ordered Size 11, and they fit my 10 1/2 foot just fine, including my orthotic inserts. This is the size I normally order in most shoes--dress or athletic--that I purchase. To the guy below who had problems fitting his waterskis into the opening: Get a shoehorn.
dpj1Day 2: I wore these shoes for half the day yesterday, and I have to say, they are extremely uncomfortable. I am HOPING they will be more comfortable once they break in. The question becomes, will I be able to stand wearing them long enough to break them in? The tongue of the shoe is sewn into the right shoe in such a way that the seam bulges downwards onto the top of my foot. Not only is that bulging seam extremely uncomfortable, it actually cuts off my circulation, and causes my right foot to fall asleep. This was just while I was sitting at my desk! Not even walking around! I have a similar problem with a hand-made pair of heavy leather oxfords made by Tricker's, a British shoemaker. Untying it did not relieve the pressure.
Like I said, the shoes are beautiful. It has been said that style sometimes has a price. If true, then owning these shoes may be the death penalty.
just received my boots in GRAY.
couple of things:
1) my feet don't even go in. i'm a size 10.5, i ordered 10.5. never had issues with 10.5. but this show opening is too small for my whole foot to slide in. so far i have not been able to wear these AT ALL.
2) i ordered gray. what i received is a GREENISH gray color. very different from the picture on the description.
when i take a pic of them on my phone, it looks like regular gray. but in person they look green. i don't know.
i love the shoes, really well made.
i'll be contacting massdrop customer service tho.
PublishI couldn't get my leg in. I always wear a medium 10.5. I see some people are happy, but I put the shoes with a horn, and now I feel pain because it's too narrow. I wasn't able to put the shoes without horn.
SpencerMealorThanks, these are gorgeous and I was on the fence but your comment helped me to pick a size and jump in. They look incredibly well-made, and it's cool to support / have a pair of their first shoe production.
