Got mine, looks beautiful, great craft, cut almost all my face, did it it twice, wife said not again:). I guess I am doing something wrong. I was careful, not hasty, used feather blade. Any comments?
as already said below, feather blades are super sharp, on top of that open comb razors are often very "aggressive" meaning they cut well, whether that be through your beard or your face haha! Maybe try less sharp blades such as Derby? Make sure that you drag the razor straight down and you shouldn't need much pressure at all! Also make sure that handle is screwed all the way in because if it isnt you can end up with too much blade showing which can lead to cuts! Good luck, let us know how third time lucky goes!
f.angestYeah, the key is this: if you're used to electric razors you know you have to press hard against your skin to get a close shave. Safety razors like this, one the other hand, take the lighest touch... press too hard and you'll irritate the heck out of your skin. You want to glide it across your hairs, just barely touching your skin.
If you like open comb you're going to have a tough time finding something better than this razor. The blade holding design is second to none - zero wiggle room between the base plate, blade and top cap - I have all 4 stainless steel offerings from Ikon and they are all flawless. This and the slant are both suited for daily use where as the SB is much more aggressive and the OSS is really nice and mild but the split personality is hard to get used to. (I still love it though). - Also check Ikons website for the other 2 base plates for this razor especially blems in the deals section.
I should add that this razor leans toward the aggressive side. If you are a young man with a thin beard or if you have oriental genetics this might not be a good razor for you. For those of Greek, Italian, Middle Eastern, heritage, or those who are more mature with thicker dense gray beards this may be perfect for you. It's difficult to buy unseen, it's too bad there isn't a way to test drive these before you buy them.
As someone who's just used a standard gilette razor in the past, how does this compare? And what's the difference between the two different types of handles?
Yeah a lot of people are not aware that Gillette makes or made some of the best safety razors. But it makes sense, they were a major force of the development of shaving technology. Of course they don't make the handles anymore, but they do still make some excellent blades for them, and you can buy the vintage handles easily on ebay. Gillette and the other big boys make too much money on the cartridge disposables model to really pay much attention to the DE shavers.
Got mine today - quicker than expected delivery! First shave: OUTSTANDING! Less dangerous than R41 (which I love), and entirely capable of amazing BBS shaves. First shave with an Astra blade was nothing short of dreams in reality. Great grip. Great weight. So very satisfied. For those on the fence, request a replay. This one is FANTASTIC. Much better than the FatTip. I simply love this razor.
thegreatdaneFirst shave was great. Very smooth. I love the weight of this handle. will definitely be in my everyday rotation. This razor is worth every penny.
How aggressive is this razor? I have a Merkur slant and I find it a little too aggressive for everyday shaving but amazing for every other day or so, how does it compare to that type of slant if anyone can comment I'd appreciate it.
VicNDefinitely much less aggressive than the Merkur 37C Slant. The Slant is among the more aggressive safety razors available. If I were ranking them on an aggressiveness scale from 1 to 10, I'd put the Slant at a 9, a Merkur 34C or 23C at about a 3, and the Merkur Classic 1904 at about a 5-6. I'd estimate the iKon open-comb to be about a 5 on my aggressiveness scale.
As a side note, I love the Merkur Slant, but I agree with it being a bit too aggressive for every day. It's my absolute favorite first-pass razor when I've gone more than 2 days without shaving, but even then, I usually switch to something else for second pass.
I find open comb razors like this one and the Merkur Classic 1904 to be excellent choices for every-other-day shaving. They handle the extra day's growth better than some of the more mild razors, but they're more forgiving than the slant, especially if I use the same razor for multiple passes.
ChristopherCashellThank you. I absolutely agree. I ended up getting this Ikon OC on the last drop and I love it. I still use my Merkur slant if I go a few days without shaving but I love the Ikon for every day/every other day use.
