What is SpaceFN and why you should give it a try
The SpaceFN concept - setting up your space key as a layer switch when held - is probably one of the most useful tweaks in the keyboard hobby. Let me explain how it works. My SpaceFN article on kbd.news made some rounds recently - quite surprisingly given the age of this concept. This piece you're reading is a condensed version of the full post. If you're left with unanswered questions, you'll most likely find the info you're looking for in the original write-up. On my imaginary top list of the most useful keyboard features, tweaks and hacks, SpaceFN would deserve a podium finish for sure. But what makes it so special? In short: SpaceFN is easy to implement, easy to learn, costs nothing, can be used with any keyboard, and can improve your productivity instantly. I will list its benefits below, but can state right at this point that the SpaceFN concept, setting up your space key as a layer switch when held, is clearly one of the most useful tweaks in the keyboard hobby....

I'm currently researching a dactyl build, and have considered desoldering all of my zealios switches to use there. I figure once I get the switches off I might have better access to the USB-C connection and may be able to solder on the replacement ports I bought. Just be aware that both USB-C ports are shot and will need to be repaired before the board is functional again. Who knows, might be easier to buy new zealios switches direct instead of desoldering everything
I already researched what I need to resolder the ports. Looks harder than assembling the kit but probably doable. It's a shame how flimsy they turned out to be. And cables provided with the latest drop didn't help either since the connectors on them are very stiff.
Thanks for the update. Please post how it goes.
I managed to desolder all the switches yesterday, but still haven't been able to pull the PCB off. There are trace amounts of solder still binding the prongs to the little copper inserts, and in some light prying I'm pretty sure I pulled up a part of the PCB on one of them. 90% sure it's trashed now, but at least I'll still have the switches, teensy board and screens. Super disappointed with the whole thing since I _really_ liked this board, but what can you do. I might buy a blank ergodox PCB in the future to rebuild, but this is basically the final nail in the coffin for me and massdrop. Offering a 1 year warranty on something so poorly constructed is stupid to say the least. Meanwhile my Chinese made Ergodox has been flawless for 4 years, I just hate that it has MX Browns!!
I'm enjoying this board very much too. What's this Chinese made Ergodox? Are referring to ErgoDone?
