Massdrop, one request: when you sell shoes, include a picture of the sole. We need to see how wide it is, what the shape is, what the lugs look like, etc.

That's what Innov8 considers a wide forefoot? It doesn't lok that wide from this picture. I think including top of shoe as well is best, especially if you have a shoe where the sole if the heel is much wider than the upper is near the heel. Eg this is true on my Salomon X Ultra, another trail runner/boot hybrid.

mtlobbinIt's wide enough at the widest point. I have an older generation Roclite which is probably built on the same last. I have 2E feet (pretty wide but not caveman feet) and no problems across the widest point. The toe box could be a little wider, but the downside of that would be more sliding. I like them the way they are.

I normally wear size 10.5 D or DD width- ordered size 11 and they fit just fine. The toe box was a little snug at first. They are light boots with good support and the soles do well over uneven terrain yet don't feel "flimsy". I'm glad I didn't pass these up.

Hi folks! Ryan here from Inov-8. Hubert pointed out that the last photo is showing a Gore-Tex version of this shoe. This is not correct. The black/grey version is NOT gore-tex. Please refer to the other photos of the black/grey for this drop. We do plan to drop the Gore-Tex version at some point in the future.

These are currently 70 USD at Sierra Trading Post. Not a good deal.

dtsavageOnly in Dark Grey/Blue/Black color. I'd pay the $18 extra for these, but that's a personal decision. Not a good deal if price is the only consideration, agreed.

seems like a great option for a light, breathable trail hiking boot.

JamesXI've experienced an earlier incarnation of this one -- and I'd call it a decent trail shoe. It doesn't have the sole protection of a hiking boot, and my feet know about it whenever there's any rocks on the trail. I use them on groomed trails — not too much small rock or tree roots that puts pressure at a narrow part of the sole. Other than that, I really appreciate the minor ankle support they offer, and they they are awesomely light. If I'm wanting to go very fast/light, or I'm on a day hike where a few bruises underfoot is worth it, then they're gold.

BigBlokeThe previous was probably the roclite 286 and 400. I've used the roclite gtx 286 to climb several non-technical mountains (~4000m; so just 2-3 days), as well as approaches for even higher (~6000m, so 8+ days, not including summit day, where I switched to proper mountaineering boots w/crampons). The sole is very soft, but grip is really good on dry ground (obviously not on ice/snow). For the longer trips, I put in superfeet carbon insoles to make up for the lack of support.
But if your feet aren't used to it, then I wouldn't recommend going so lightweight, and instead go for a more cushioned and supportive boot/shoe.

Can anyone chime in how durable these are? Obviously nothing is bulletproof, and taking into account the price range, but how do these compare to say Merrell or Salomon etc for durability?

Anyone know how sizing compares to Merrell?

AtomkinderThese run a size smaller. I normally wear 12, including Merrel Moab. My Inov-8 are too small in a 12, need a 13 to fit comfortably.

A couple of reviews mentioned that the sizing might be smaller than usual. Might want to check them out again before you chose the wrong size.

ZiggyStarHe had a follow-up review in which he kind of backtracked on that.
"I mentioned in my ‘first impressions’ that I thought the shoes in the ROCLITE range sized a 1/2 size too small. Now I am not sure? Sorry for being indecisive but I have run in them for 1-month and I have been very happy, I must stress though that I used a thinner sock than normal."

I bought my same typical Inov-8 size of 11 (I almost always wear a 10.5, occasionally an 11).

ZiggyStarI love innov-8 shoes, but I have had trouble with the sizing. See the photo - the two shoes are supposed to be the same size, but the X-talon is a bit small for me, whole the other is perfect. And notice the cm measurement is different! I usually fit EU size 44, so the X-talons are at least half a size small, maybe more. It's great that innov-8 do make their shoes in half size steps, but to take advantage of it you really need to try them on, since they vary from model to model.

Anyone have experience with how quickly these drain and dry?

nfischerCan't speak to these specifically, but I have two pairs of the older generation Roclite 295. They drain and dry quite well. Maybe that could be better if they had drainage holes, but I routinely slosh through creeks in these and keep walking, and wait for the sun to dry them out.
