The colours on the swab sheet look different to those in other photos. For example, the Perle Noir seems to have purplish tinge to it, but in actual fact this is a solid black ink.

@Meitachi, the examples you provided are pretty impressive. Also, thank you and @MikeJamrock for your very kind words.
Determining accuracy of ink color and behavior is very tricky when relying entirely on what you see on your screen, but there are things you can do to mitigate the issues. In no particular order,
look at a number of different swab/swatch examples. The two provided by @Meitachi are excellent. Another options is to go to: gouletpens.com -> comparison tools -> swab shop -> view by ink brand. *Warning* - you might just end up spending a bit more time than you anticipate on their site ;-).
Here are some other tricks:
1. Use your sharpest computer screen for viewing the swabs/swatches.
2. Create a point of reference. This will help immeasurably as it mitigates the weirdness created when different people use different pens and paper to show of the ink. 2-A: Do some "sample" writing with a familiar ink that's common to your ink collection and theirs. 2-B (or not 2-B): Compare and contrast your "control" with the same ink swatch/swab on your screen. Does your sample appear darker or lighter? More or less feathering? Now you have your point of reference. As long as the samples on the screen were all made the same way, you now have a vague idea of how a new ink might behave (in terms of saturation, shading, feathering).
For example: If I write with a known ink - say Diamine Ancient Copper - with a medium Metropolitan on Rhodia paper, I can clearly see the result. Then, on my computer screen, I find a swab of Ancient Copper and the swab appears to look the same, but with much more shading. Now I know that WYSIWYG for color (or saturation or whatever is the same on both), but my shading won't be as impressive as what I see on the screen. I can look at other swabs from the same source with this info in mind.
As I mentioned earlier, if you search "J. Herbin Ink Review", be prepared. There are lots. Really, sifting through them can eat up huge chunks of your time. There are also loads of reviews (with pics) for this stuff on numerous blogs, fpn and fpgeeks.
As always, I hope this was helpful to the community.
Cheers.

Would really love a full J. Herbin correspondence drop: Like 2 inks, sealing wax, brass stamp w/ handle, and maybe a Clairefontaine Triomphe paper & envelope set.

Looks like some of the standard J.Herbin colors are missing. Any chance of adding Bleu Pervenche, Diabolo Menthe, Vert Reseda, Ambre de Birmanie, Poussiere de Lune, Bouton d'Or, Orange Indien, Bouquet D'Antan, Rose Cyclamen, Violet Pensee, and especially Marme de Cassis? thanks!

WDP32Thank you for your post! Unfortunately, we could only get the colors that the vendor had available in stock but we will definitely ask for more colors the next time around!

Can anyone comment about how this ink compares to other inks like noodlers, diamine, and others?

nanook_the_greatMuch less saturated, a more watery consistency, generally more muted tones. I think they tend to be a lot of peoples' "starter inks" (because they're pretty widely available) and then a lot of folks abandon them for "punchier" ones like Diamine/Noodlers/etc. And the bottle design is annoying, very hard to fill from once the ink drops a bit. Having said all that, some colors I've used are tremendous and still among my favorites. Every time I fill with Eclat de Saphir, for instance, I have a moment where I go, "I always forget how nice this ink is." This is a good drop at a good price, so give some a whirl!

Hi I am new to fountain pen use, and I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on starting up? Is it better to use cartridges or to use converters? Things like that. Also, if it is recommend that I use a converter (my first pen is a Pilot Metropolitan that I'm getting from a drop), what kind of ink should I use? What's the best value ink and is this particular one good? Thank you.

I have Iroshizuku ink. I love it.
I write with a Pilot Vanishing Point Decimo. Fine nib, and the color scheme I get when I write with it is beautiful on paper. My writing is kind of inconsistent, so I never get a single, dark shade and instead I get varying shades in my writing, but I love love love my Iroshizuku ink.

jboibConverters are much better, you get a much more diverse choice of ink when using one. I definitely recommend picking one up. Noodler's ink is pretty good in value, as is this one.

FYI, J. Herbin is ~2.5 months late in shipping out https://www.massdrop.com/buy/j-herbin-calligraphy-set, apparently because they haven't provided the inks that were ordered.

Curious as to why mine wasn't shipped when I was #17 in the drop?

I am guessing the vendor shipped only certain colors, and whoever's order matched those colors in the most efficient way possible were shipped first.
penguinzHey @penguinz and @Chiefwhite -- @penguinz is correct on this, we do prioritize shipping in order of joining in the unfortunate event that orders have to be shipped partially, but sometimes we're short on the styles or colors needed to fill earlier orders and we do our best not to let that hold up the rest of the group.

The J. Herbin inks in this drop are excellent. I've been a huge fan of Poussiere De Lune since I was given a bottle of it. I've never had any issues with the ink, it's very well behaved (for the papers and pens I use), and has great color. I haven't used any of the high intensity colors these days, and tend towards more of a Legal Lapis like look from Noodler's (blue black). I enjoyed the two bottles I have and definitely recommend them for anyone on the fence.

Hey everyone,
We’ve submitted our order for J. Herbin Ink shortly after the drop ended.
Now that the order has been placed, our vendor is preparing it for shipment. In the meantime, we will also be getting our warehouse ready to handle the reshipment of the product to everyone as soon as it arrives.
Expect an update from us on 11/11 or sooner if something comes up.
Cheers!
