Any idea how these would fare as glacier glasses? Or better to wait for a drop on the Explorer frames?

They would be fine as glacier glasses. They block side light.
I've got Cat 3 and Cat 4 glasses, and found that Cat 3 was fine for 6000m peaks in Nepal, Cat 4 were much less useful generally (too dark for all but the sunniest days high up).

They work great for glacier glasses. I have the Explorer also and bounce between the 2. The side shields are great!
