aturlov: I'm intrigued by the idea of counterfeit BRS-3000Ts. On the one hand, why counterfeit an $11 (retail) stove? A model that itself is a copy of the heavier $30 Fire Maple FMS-300T? As opposed to counterfeiting some $70 MSR offering? On the other hand, it would explain those BRS-3000Ts about two years ago with marginal threads (the ones that mate to the canister) and perhaps our different experiences (yours and mine) versus Jim's and Miguel's with the pot supports. Or maybe the manufacturer, in putting out a cheap little stove, has poor QA/QC and the machining and alloys vary somewhat from batch to batch?
Like any stove, tent or sleeping pad, (1) test it when you receive it and could still return it or get a refund through Amazon / eBay, and (2) retest it at the beginning of every season to remind yourself, in the light of day, how to set it up, that all the tent poles are there, it hasn't mildewed, you've packed the mini-Bic with it, etc. If I just grab a tent in the Spring (or tire chains in the Winter). without testing them first, I really can't count on it working for me 100%.
DavidinKenaiI suspect it's just bare-bones quality manufacturing with little to no QC really although it could be counterfeit, Amazon is full of identical products that differ only in the brand-name sticker on them (I'm looking at one right now in fact) .. so why not also crank out an 11 dollar stove, and realize you'll sell a lot more if you use someone else's brand name ? I guess in this sense it's not a "cheap knock off", it's "another cheap knock off". But it probably is just bad QC.
Great advice on testing out gear as soon as you get it, particularly if it's an online deal with a short return period. I'm actually pondering a -10 quilt, but by the time it arrives we won't be in single digits anymore and although I really, really want a -10 quilt I don't want to wait a year before I can test it :(
@aturlov yes, I was referring to Hikin Jim's experience with it deforming. I have to say, having the support at an angle like that does seem like awkward design. Either way, ultralight or night I just got two new stoves so I think I have to lay off the stoves for a while until I can put these through more paces. I don't want to be "that guy" who has a closet full of unused gear.
So mine arrived, and it's a fantastic little stove, no doubt.
Still to be clear for anyone considering them on the next drop, they are mostly made of aluminium and stainless steel. Only the pot support is titanium.
The product description (at least at the time of purchase for me) did not state this at all. In the specs it just said materials: titanium. This is entirely false and misleading and makes the stove appear to be much better value than it really is
I used this stove over the weekend, solo camping with a small titanium pot. The stove works well, has good heat output, and simmer control. As others have noted, the body of it is aluminum, not titanium. However, it still feels very light to me. One issue: it was hard for me to screw it on the fuel canister at first. It seems the threads were also coated in the grey metallic coating you can see on the base of the stove (for protection?). However, once I got it on, subsequent times were easy to take it off or put it back on. Overall, it worked pretty well for me.
Fans0ngKovea is a hidden gem here in the states. I have their Spider remote canister stove and it is awesome. I have also learned that they make some stoves/components for MSR and other major brands. Kovea is top shelf, buy with confidence.
EMSchonSame happened with me. Second order in a row where a product other than advertised has been shipped. I reached out and hopefully I get the replacement soon.
First time issue want a problem, but for it to happen twice in a row is a little ridiculous.
Answering my own question: both stoves are made by Kovea, and are nearly identical. The only real difference is that the Litemax is 6 grams lighter. In other words, this is a good drop!
I just received my Kovea Supalite Stove so there was no confusion about which version was shipped this drop. Haven't tried it yet but it looks great and is very light. However, the box says 60g and I put it on a scale and it does weigh 60g. The drop description says 56g. Could somebody please fix the text of the drop so if/when this drop becomes active again people will know the correct weight.
I did some research and the 56g version is only sold in Korea. The version sold in the US is 60g.
I must say I am a big fan of Mass Drop but you guys gotta beat out Amazon or it's a no-brainer on where my dollar goes. The set is cheaper, ships immediately (free with prime) right now. I won't be so brash as to post a link but thought I would participate in the free flow of information and point out an occasional hiccup in the MD business model.
ElectronicVices@ElectronicVices - Thanks for the post. I appreciate our members who do their research and share their findings with us, whether its a good or bad review, or better pricing elsewhere. The openness keeps me on my toes too, and I try very, very hard to get the best deals for our community. After your posting today, I searched Amazon for a better deal on the stove or the cookset . . . and I couldn't find anything that comes close to this drop. But on the plus side, I had a great conversation with Kovea today and they're so psyched about Massdrop that they offered us a fourth drop point for our best price ever on this stove or cook set.
