Do Iron gall Inks like this require special treatment when used in a fountain pen? I understand they have been associated with clogging and needed very through pen cleaning when used. Is there a particular type of pen that works best with IG inks?
AmafanI know this isn't of much use for you, but I am so concerned about what iron galls might do to my fountain pens that I use them with dip pens almost always, and when I do use in a FP, I use my most inexpensive pens, and only partially fill them. One of the keys is not leaving it in your pen too long. If you are careful not to do that, you should be okay. I'm just to much of a nervous Nelly to attempt it except with very inexpensive pens.
angelesThing is, your inexpensive pens are the ones most likely to be damaged! One of the major reasons gold was historically used for good nibs was its resistance to corrosion.
CharlesDuffyHistorically speaking, if course, gold is the most corrosion resistant material available, but stainless steel is a pretty good modern alternative - and these more contemporary iron gall inks are a lot less corrosive than their predecessors. Still, I won't be trusting them in my more expensive pens till I've given them a good test run in my cheaper (Fountain Pen Revolution and/or Jinhao) pens...
