willpower, feel free to PM me on head-fi (same username)
i'm interested. Whats your price
What did this go for the last time it was dropped?
xXxDanXx
It looks like it was 1499 USD, which included the upgraded linear power supply (based on this: http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/649297738-linear-tube-audio-mz2s-price-match-sale-only-24-hours-need-only-a-deposit-to-secure-the-deal/). So about $330 off their price on their website. Although I think they're also having 10% promotion for limited time. So you'd still save about 200 bucks. I'm not 100% clear whether all specs match up though (e.g. stock tubes may be different from what they sold through Massdrop, and the linear power supply option is listed on their site as LPS+, does that mean it's been upgraded again?)

Thanks for the reply, a reasonable discount for where it classes and the lowest I've seen yet. If Massdrop drops it again it'll be a worth while consideration. The current MZ-2 on LTA's site is a newer version of the MZ-2S that was offered in this drop. The following is the description LTA provides for the version progression:
"Our first product was a re-introduction of David Berning's MicroZOTL; our MicroZOTL2.0. Since then we've made many small and several larger changes to the case and components we use, but we have always used and continue to use Berning's original circuit. When we added an improved power supply, that product eventually took on the name "MicroZOTL2.0 Deluxe". When we decided to use NOS 12SN7 tubes and manually alter the circuit to allow this, we created the "MZ2-S" around this, with a further upgraded power supply and some other improvements. Eventually we replaced the manually altered circuit boards with jumpered boards, which negated the need for completely separate products and we decided to discontinue certain aspects of the MicroZOTL2.0, like the locking headphone jack and the color scheme, while making other features that the MZ2-S had introduced available as options for any order. The "S" went from denoting these upgrades to essentially meaning the same thing that "Deluxe" had before it; an amp with an upgraded power supply. The "MZ2" therefore took the place of the "MicroZOTL2.0", as our amps were now markedly changed from what the MicroZOTL2.0 had until then been. "
Hoping to have this active on massdrop soon..

Got the amp today and impressive with build quality. But for the some reason that my amp doesn't have the gold brass screws as the promise of the exclusive drop editions.

Thanks for your reply. I did go through the box but just couldn't find the small bag with the brass screw. I will contact you soon. Btw, the amp is sweet and I am amazed with the sound and build quality. Great job.

Very happy that you're enjoying the amp, and my apologies for the missed screws. You can email hifi@lineartubeaudio.com to reach us.
Mine arrived yesterday. Sounds pretty darn good out the box with some TH900s
The final orders have been loaded onto the UPS truck for distribution! All Massdrop orders have now shipped.
Got mine last evening. Sounds awesome. I first tried it with some Klipsch Heresy's as a standalone amp and then as a preamp driving Quicksilver monoblocks with KT-150's. Sounded awesome using it as a preamp with first the Heresy's and far better with a pair of Trenner & Friedl Art monitors. A bit anemic as a standalone amp.
Can someone suggest the best way to burn-in the preamp?
Great job Will, Mark and company!!

My own experience for what its worth, is that the fun is in listening to the break in process. I appreciate som burn in by the manufacturer since it eliminates DOA units and mistakes that don't perform.
When I start listening, I capture my initial impressions, especially any differences I hear from when I demoed it. Problem is usually that what I heard the unit with was different from what Inhave in the system that its been dropped into. All kinds of issues of system synergy can become apparent.
The microZOTL seems to have amazing clarity and dynamics in my system (Zu/DL-103 cartridge, VPI Prime, Parks Audio Budgie SUP, Bottlehead Eros phono preamp, microZOTL as preamp, First Watt F3, Zu Omens). I've already repositioned the speakers to rebalance treble and bass balance.
I brought up break in just because I hear a bit more closed in sound and a different tonal balance than what I heard at the Capital Audio Fest.
So I'm just spinning records I know well and listen for changes. It'll be weeks to accumlate the 60 or so hours it might take. For me, part of the fun.
By the way, I loved those Quicksilvers back in the day.
UPS just picked up the first 12 orders (not counting the three that went USPS earlier today), and we're excited for everyone to get theirs. We'll be shipping the rest of the orders a week from today.

Got mine yesterday. Seems to need some burn-in time.
Jjvornov
The burn-in time did end up being shorter than we wanted, so that we could get the units to customers without adding to the already delayed shipping time. We also aren't yet as familiar with how long the RCAs and GE 6201s take to burn-in compared to the Tung-sols. Due to the low-current circuit, 60-80 hours is recommended, with 100 hours being ideal. Most of the units in the first shipment had around 30-40 hours, and a few had longer. The second shipment's units will all have at least 50 hours on them. One reviewer recently told me that 90% of his job is burning in. It's an interesting part of audio.
Has the concrete hardened on the Oct 12 ship date for the first batch?
oregontreat
The concrete is fully set. Just watched the UPS truck drive away, full of the first dozen MZ2-S amps . The rest go out a week from today.
How's the production coming along? Very excited to try this out. If the MZ2-S performs as well as I hope it will, next comes your 10 or 40 watt amp!!

Why did i get a message from UPS that an order was ready to be picked up from Massdrop in NJ on October 4?
oregontreat
I do not know that answer. Massdrop is handling shipping labels and we have not yet received them. They'll have to answer that one.
Hello, Here's the update! The estimated ship date is the week of October 5th for the first batch, which will be the first half of the orders. The rest of the orders should ship 7-10 days after that. We were hoping to ship ahead of schedule, but a lot has been going on over at LTA since the drop ended. First, we got more than twice as many orders as we expected in our most optimistic estimate! So thank you all again for joining the drop. We also had an employee need some time off (we don't have many employees), had to pack up and move our operation to a new space sooner than we thought and get everything running again, which is great but did eat into manufacturing time. We had a big batch of essential parts from a vendor reveal itself as suspect, and testing each thoroughly would take longer than ordering new ones, which negated at least a week's worth of work on this order. Just a few bumps, but we have everyone on the Massdrop units as much as possible, and we look forward to shipping them out.

Thanks for the update
Thanks again for joining this drop! We have submitted the group's order with the vendor for the Linear Tube Audio MZ2-S Amp Exclusive Launch and they are working hard to prepare it for shipment.
As soon as the group's order is ready at the vendor's location, they will ship the individual orders directly to you. The current estimated ship date is 10/5.
We will keep the group updated throughout the fulfillment process. You can expect an update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 10/12.
If you have any questions, please visit our Help Center (http://massdrop.com/helpcenter).
I missed LTA, anyway to still join
How will the modifications of the MZ2-S effect the type of high efficiency speakers that work synergistic-ally together compared with the original MZ-2?
david132
The output power is not affected, so your 1-watt friendly speakers will still be the type you'd look for.
Will early orders be shipped first?
oregontreat
We're finalizing our production plan for the Massdrop orders, but it's looking like we're going to be doing two large shipments about a week apart, organized by order time. This may change, but either way we'll be posting updates on our Facebook and Instagram.
I want to say thank you to the Massdrop community for expressing so much interest in our new product! We wanted to do this Exclusive Launch with Massdrop because I know how supportive the community of people here can be, and we decided that it was worth offering a larger discount than we typically would out of hope that the interest was here to make it worthwhile. Our expectations for the drop were significantly exceeded, and we're buckling down into full MZ2-S mode at the shop to get everything produced and delivered by the estimated ship date.
Thanks again to everyone who joined the drop, and to everyone who took time to look at our product.
Best, Will

For better or worse, the Massdrop model's effectiveness depends on strictly time-limited parameters, so the opportunity to join is no longer available. The MZ2-S will be available for pre-order at $1845 on our website soon, and we will begin to fulfill retail sales of the MZ2-S after we've shipped all of the Massdrop orders.

Thanks....I stood on the fence too long! lol
I bought this just to use as a preamp with a big tube amp. The high end audio press loved it even without the outboard power supply. At CAF it sounded quite relaxed and liquid. Can't wait for the ship date.
Most of us realize that these upgrades are dubious at best. Especially if you have experience with these types of mods. Nothing can be more horrific to see an already great amp gutted and stuffed with upgrades. It is somewhat ironic that the designers of these amps are usually non-plussed by these upgrades. However, they do want to sell amps after all this is a business. As far as the threads go, simply block or mentally dismiss them as nonsense. The main offenders are those who start out by saying that the amp is "amazing" (insert hyperbole) and then each time they do some type of upgrade the amp "goes to another level."
Having said all of that, a less noisy power supply will usually produce a better sound. How much depends on how noisy your power is to begin with (obviously worse in urban areas). As suggested it is best to start out with the original amp first, and if it sounds great just stop and enjoy the music. If you are insecure about what you think is good and susceptible to suggestion and compulsive about owning the best and you have the $$$ just by the top of the line.

I agree with all said. My only point was I think the amp builder is doing more harm than good in attracting new buyers to their product. When someone is looking for information on a new product it is somewhat a turn off not to be able to find basic info, because of all the advanced info on upgrades. I have nothing against mods/upgrades but I feel it would be much better to keep this separate from basic product infromation.
lugnut
100% agreed. It is important to note that the guy on head-fi hijacking that thread about upgrades actually has nothing to do with Linear Tube Audio, he's simply pushing his own product. Best to just ignore him or block him.
I was very interested in this product, but the thread at head-fi lost me with all the upgrades and the power supply guy pushing his $$$ products. I wish there was a thread for the amp only, and one for all the mods & upgrades.
lugnut
I totally agree, PSU guy is out of control. If you read around his stuff though you'll find the ZOTL2 is a top notch option, really an endgame headphone amp. There's a great review over at Headphone Guru that DoctorJazz wrote too that's all meat.
I'm planning to move to Japan next year but will it work okay? Just wanted to make sure as they have 100V/50hz
taresabo
We use a different transformer for power supplies going to Japan, but contact us directly and we can, I'm sure, work something out.
Hi everyone, I wanted to highlight a difference in the model you'll be receiving. You'll be receiving gold-colored brass screws with this exclusive release. A photo of them installed can be seen below:

Matt.T
Just to clarify, you'll receive the amp with the steel screws installed, as in the other pictures, which is how all MZ2-S models look. The brass screws will be included only with Massdrop orders in case anyone who bought one during the release wants to gold things up. After the drop the brass screws won't be an option.
Quick question. Will the linear power supply from this drop plug into the auxiliary power supply jack on the original Micro ZOTL?
I have one of those. It would be great to have this new variant, but also be able use the upgraded power supply with the original unit.
Load 2 more comments
Right, of course. The plug is the same size, so you should be able to plug it in to the jack for the battery option. And if you ever happened to get a battery for the original, you can plug that into the new version as well. For portability. :)

Awesome. Thanks!
Great.
How can we add the three way input to an order already placed thru Massdrop?
Load 1 more comment
Will, Massdrop support has not responded to my query for two days. Any othr way to add the three way input? Thanks.
oregontreat
I'll check with them to make sure it's on file, and I'm going to be in the workshop while we're making the amps, so I'll make sure yours has the three-input option.
Hi,
I am a newbie to the tube amp world and I am about to order the Linear Tube Audio MZ2-S Amp from massdrop Exclusive Launch. I have a question in mind that I will use only this amp in my office. Music source would be from my onkyo DXP1 DAC. Now, could anyone recommend a pair of speaker (or monitor speaker) to pair with this beautiful amp? Book shelf size would be my choice since I don't have big office.

Kinliu
Hello, The regular MicroZOTL2 has been my only amp at home until recently, and as the MZ2-S has the same output wattage, the same considerations would apply. I've been very happy with my Klipsch RP-160M speakers, which also have a slightly smaller version, the RP-150M. With my 1watt output, they put out impressive bass and go loud enough that I can't turn things all the way up unless I want my neighbors to dislike me, though this is a DC apartment living room, which may be smaller than your office. I also had the opportunity to hear the MicroZOTL2 powering the Tekton Design Lore Reference, and have no doubt that the Mini Lore Studio Monitor would sound equally as good. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend those. The third speaker I'll list, though I haven't heard it myself, is the Omega Super 3, either the desktop or the 3i monitor, just because they're very sensitive, attractive, and I've heard great things about their performance. All of these speakers are 94.5db-96db sensitivity, and that's the minimum you'll want to be looking for unless the speakers are on your desk, a meter away.
If anyone else has good speaker recommendations, I'd love to hear them. Maybe if you built your desk into a pair of Klipschorns, that would be the ideal setup, but finding small speakers that can be well-powered with 1 watt would be wonderful.
UPDATE: We've finished some listening tests and other calculations, and are happy to announce that the MZ2-S will come standard with an upgraded power supply with a significantly higher-quality regulator and possibly another performance enhancement that we're still testing, but I thought I'd let it be known at this point, as there is a performance increase. For those curious, this upgrade will soon be available as an option for the MicroZOTL2 Deluxe for a $50 surcharge.
Also an UPDATE: though we were hesitant to implement it as standard due to the front-plate silkscreen not being fully labeled for it, as well as the increased cost, we do offer the option of a third input being added for an additional $35. Input 3 will be wired to the center position of a three-way switch that looks the same as the current input switch; inputs 1 and 2 will still correspond to the marked positions.
My apologies for these not being part of the original drop information.
willsw
Power supply upgrades, "higher quality regulator" as mentioned in the "UPDATE" are much more meaningful than different screws. Especially, when this offering is an exclusive for MD (anybody can change a bunch of screws). I'm not sure if you know but there is a thread on Headfi about upgrades to the MZ2, most of which IMHO are not significant (cable, connectors, damping materials) in an already well designed amp. However, a bigger/overated, quieter power supply makes a huge difference., after all the PS is mostly what you are listening to. What other improvements (hopefully bigger/more filtering caps) in the PS are LTA working on?
Compassionator
The screws are a fun thing, of course, not a performance upgrade. In the realm of power supplies, we're exploring different designs for future products, but this upgrade is relatively small, with the higher quality regulator and possibly a diode change, as we wanted an upgrade but also didn't want to raise the list price, and decided it was worthwhile absorbing the cost for a better sounding product, given what we envision the MZ2-S to be. The power supplies discussed in the upgrade thread are several hundred dollars more than ours, and while we could develop and produce more expensive, higher performance power supplies, we prefer to offer the highest performance at certain price points. If we wanted to sell a $2500 MicroZOTL2 or MZ2-S, there would be more involved than just a power supply swap and rewiring.
Exactly what I'm looking for for my studio at the price I can't afford :(. Are there any similar things on the market around 600 bucks?
If I was in the market for a $1500 amp (which I'm not) that 1 year warranty would certainly have me thinking twice. Is that all the faith the makers have in their product?
