FYI for those people thinking of getting this :
The few Amazon.com reviews that exist have multiple people stating the same problem, namely the tail switch conks out after while. The CPF thread on this light has a post currently at the end of the thread which hints at this being a weak point:
"My only complaint is that damn switch. It works fine now but I could see it being the first thing to malfunction."
I am NOT saying the switch WILL conk out, just that more than a few people have had issues with theirs.
That being said, this is very similar to the Nitecore MT06 which I have two of and I am very happy with both of them but they are Cree lights and I really want to get a Nichia. In the above-mentioned CPF thread [linked below], it is mentioned that Nitecore IS coming out with a Nichia version of their MT06. Not sure when they are being released as only their PDF catalog currently shows it and their website still only lists the Cree model but the relevant catalog images are below in case you are interested.

*** UPDATE - 2017-03-03 *** Official website link now available: http://flashlight.nitecore.com/product/mt06md Mysteriously shown with two Energizer alkaline AA's instead of the usual Eneloop's Nothing on AliExpress or Ebay yet though. Would be nice if MD could have a drop for it, am sure Nitecore wouldnt mind getting guaranteed product penetration.
*** UPDATE - 2017-04-25 *** Couldnt wait so I just bought myself one from eBay. Received it last week. Starting off in low mode is great for its intended audience but I can see it pissing the EDC types off. The color IS more accurate and it IS a lot closer to sunlight but the difference is not super-obvious. But hey, I now have a Nichia as well.
nikonf5You are the reason why I come to the discussion tab. You're awesome :)

nikonf5This is awesome. The Lumintop IYP365 Nichia is my EDC, but the MLH sequence drives me crazy. Last night I was in a theater and kept on fiddling with the switch so l could read the program without blinding everyone around me.
If the Nitecore MT06MD is otherwise as good as this Lumintop, I'll gladly drop another $25 just to get LMH.

Can anyone explain to me why I'd want the NICHIA 219BT LED when its performance is literally half that of the CREE? Are they cheaper to replace or what? Based on the performance specs provided there is absolutely no reason to pick up the Nichia bulb imo. Thanks to any responses explaining why. I thought of one other reason one might want it over the CREE and I guess that would be the color signature of the Nichia. I have no experience how one would compare visually to the other.

Can be had for $23.90/prime on Amazon... This drop is not a significant savings, especially when you figure in the cost of shipping.

Hello. I was curious if any experienced and could discuss the differende between the CREE 200 and NICHEA 125 options. Besides being brighter, are there durabiltiy concerns or battery wear with one vs. the other for example? could this flashlight use rechargeable aaa batteries instead ? thanks. Brice

J99D@WLVA wins the internet for today, or at least our little corner of it. Really thoughtful of you to post a detailed review for everyone here, espefinally on a new item that folks are unlikely to have Experience with. That is what Discussions are all about, thanks!

JonasHeinemanThanks for the kind words, JonasHeineman. I did a ton of background research before buying my own Lumintop IYP365. As far as I can tell, the Nichia version is the best flashlight commercially available for anyone looking for a bright high-CRI penlight. I'm very pleased with mine.

I *just* received one of these penlights two days ago and highly recommend it. The high of the Nichia 219BT is definitely bright enough for typical urban uses, such as being visible while crossing busy streets at night, while the low is soft enough to find keyholes without a blinding flash.
I highly recommend the Nichia. The high-CRI LED provides far superior color rendering to my previous penlight and even to my neutral white Zebralight SC5w. @J99D: the Nichia provides far better color, while the Cree is brighter.
As for batteries, I recommend Eneloop Pros, which are rechargeable, retain their charge longer, and won't leak like alkalines.

Some further thoughts: the three light levels are chosen well on the Nichia. Each is useful: Low is discreet and non-blinding (a good level to check pupillary response). Medium is good for intermediate distances like walking along a dimly lit street. High is great for being seen.
I would have only one recommendation to improve this light. The user interface should have cycled {Low, Medium, High} instead of {Medium, Low, High}. I don't need mode memory (always starting on Low would have been fine) and I don't need a strobe on a penlight (though I think it would have been excellent). But more than anything, I sure wish this light was LMH instead of MLH!

WLVAThere's a good reason Lumintop went with MLH. Medium is the most used mode for the intended purpose of this light - general use around work or home.
If you're looking for a light by the bedside or in a camping tent, then it makes sense to have L come on first, so that you cause minimal disturbance to anyone around you in the middle of the night.
But here's the thing, with a L mode at 3 or 5 lumens, this light's L setting is too bright as a bedside light. You'll want something that comes on at one lumen or less (moonlight mode) for a bedside light, with LMH sequence.
Since Lumintop designed this light to have a much higher lumen L mode, it's not meant as a bedside light, hence MLH is the logical mode sequence for this light.

MassDMLH is counterintuitive. There's a good reason most flashlights are LMH. This is exactly what a user expects when cycling through modes. Lumintop failed to consider that when users change modes, it's typically because they want the light to be brighter. When I'm using Medium, my typical need is to get more, not less, light. (For this reason, even MHL, while somewhat confusing on first click, would be better than MLH.)
The Nichia version of the light is rated at 1.5 lumens, not 3 or 5 lumens. I use mine as a bedside light, and find the modes on the Nichia to be well spaced, even if they are placed in a poor order.
Despite this flaw, the Lumintop IYP365 remains my favorite penlight. It's part of my EDC.

I'm in for this one.
I love this form factor as it really disappears in your pocket and is really unobtrusive.
Two AAA batteries (or 1 AA) is the lowest I find to give enough illumination for my needs.
Plus the color accurate Nichia emitter, and a clip that looks substantial and usable and it ticks all the boxes for a flashlight of this cost and type for me.
Can't wait to get it!
