For anyone debating between the mini and full size:
I got the mini last time this dropped, and am loving it. Unfortunately the mini limits you in many ways once you start wanting to either make high quality or large prints. Layer height on the mini doesn't go down quite as far and the build size can definitely be limiting.
The mini is a great starter, but I'm sincerely considering getting the full size one either this drop or in the next few months anyway.
Oh man, that is a sexy 3D printer. The ones they have at school are at least 3 models earlier and not nearly this fantastic looking. If only I had 3 grand to drop on this.
We had one of these at school that we used for my Computational Art class. The thing was always getting jammed. Sure it was cheaper than other 3D printers, but I guess as always you get what you pay for.
I have a Replicator 5th gen and I love it. I was happy to see Makerbot is doing a massdrop so wanted to chime in. I print every day, multiple times a day and it rarely if ever gives me any problems. The .1 mm high-resolution setting makes any lines/layers almost if not completely invisible unless you use a magnifying glass. The .3 mm setting will print relatively quickly and is still very good quality. .2 mm is the perfect medium if you don't want to wait forever but don't want it to have easily defined lines. I'm sure the more professional 3d printers are better for those that can afford it, but as a tech guy in a school: this thing kicks ass.
wontonotnowThanks for your feedback. I think the current discourse is similar to building your own PC vs. getting a Mac. While it's not a direct comparison, I feel like the guys who like building their own 3D Printers are in a different market than the guys who just wants something that works out of the box.
Disclosure: I've both built/own my 3D printer and own the 5th Gen. Again, one costs a lot more than the other, but the ease of use and stress-free leveling really makes me going back to the 5th Gen. At the end of the day, I just want to print stuff.
Having one of Lulzbot's printers in our farm at the makerspace, I not only congratulate you for buying from a company that has stayed loyal to the open-source maker community, but also that you bought a printer that prints with wood filaments, abs, hips, pva, AND pla! With a nudge and a few modifications, we've gotten it to print NYLON as well!
RiverCityLabs.orgI'll be thrilled to add extra print heads as soon as they make that available as well. It certainly fits my 'tear it apart to see how it works as soon as I get it home' personality much better than the current state of Makerbots..
spidumI upgraded to the latest firmware on 6/9/14 with no issues. Did you call MakerBot Support? They have a live people on the other end and I've called them twice so far and not waited more than 5 mins.
Full transparency, we can't ship MakerBots internationally. MakerBot has distribution setup in for each respective continent and we can't step on their toes.
Is there a reason that both options had the same shipping price despite significant weight differences?
Since these ship from Makerbot, will they provide tracking numbers?
