ntt8997It would be better of course but you don't need to. If you've 100$ to spare you can buy a ODAC but its not mandatory

ntt8997The DACs inside the Macbooks are from Wolfson/CirrusLogic and are of premium quality, contrary to most laptop PCs. Unless your headphone amp already has a DAC included, you won’t need an outboard DAC with a Macbook. All you really need is an amp. Spend your money elsewhere

PeteMtlSo as you mentioned, which gain will be...enough? medium or standard? Im still kind of confused about that. Just need to solve this question before i decide to buy O2 amp. Thank you!

ntt8997The output of the Mac is typically over 1v, closer to 1.5v If I recall. So the higher gain on the standard gain edition O2 (6.5x) is not to be used because the O2 will distort with an input a little over 7v. All other gains are ok (3.3x on the medium gain version, 2.4x on the standard gain version, even the 1.0x gain on the medium gain version will be enough if you use efficient headphones or even average efficient headphones (HD6xx) at moderate levels of volume. Don’t bother too much with the gain settings, use a gain setting that doesn’t distort with your headphones and use a gain setting that provides adequate volume level for your taste. I recommend to use the gain setting that will at least put the volume potentiometer setting at at least 9:00 because under that setting a slight left/right volume mismatch may occur because of the potentiometer itself. I use the volume level between 10:00 and 2:00 most of the time and adjust the gain switch accordingly. Remember that you may also adjust the output volume of your Mac to avoid distortion if the output of your Mac is found to be too high. Hope it helps. If you haven’t bought your O2 yet, then I would say the medium gain version is enough for your Mac, both gain settings may be used according to level desired. On the standard gain version of the O2, only the low gain (2.4x) will be usefull. ButIf you also plan to use your O2 with lower voltage sources such as a iPhone, iPad or other low voltage devices (other phones, portable cd players, etc.) then the high gain setting on the standard version (6.5x)may be useful And you may still use the low gain (2.4x) with your Mac. Otherwise, get the medium gain version of the O2.
