I'm planning on buying this O2 amp to replace my Sound Blaster Z's because they have an output impedance of 22 ohms, but my Audio Technica ATH AD1000x's have an impedance of 40 ohms. I can't figure out if I have to get the standard gain or the medium gain on the O2 amp for my 40 ohms headphone.

KLIPZThat is what they call it here, yes. Medium Gain
... I don't know WHY they chose "standard" and "medium" as two names though.

ZilfallionI'm planing to to get the Beyerdynamic DT1990 Pro and also I'm going to be using the AD1000x as well. Should I get the medium gain model or the standard gain model?

KLIPZ102dBSPL/mw(@500Hz) means they're reasonably sensitive and 1x/3.3x should still be plenty sufficient to power them.
It's always better to use Lower Gain unless you REQUIRE the higher gains.

KLIPZChose the gain based on your source. If you are using a DAC or other device that outputs 2Vrms, you want the 1x/3.3x. If you are using a phone, iPod, or other lower power device you want higher gain.

bhighI'm going to use my Sound Blaster Z as my dac so should I stick with the 1x/3.3x gain?

MCCRAIGYIt still depends on the output level of the source. Check the specs on your card.

MCCRAIGYYou would technically be "double amping" if you use the O2 with the Sound blaster Z.

bruc3Is "double amping" a bad thing?

JYHKYou will be amplifying noise introduced in the first amplifier in the second

JYHKDouble Amping is a "thing" it's often blown out of proportion in how bad it is, but yes, it's technically a thing. It probably won't be very noticeable. Taking a look at the manual of the sound card, you have a Line-level Output jack that's the middle of the five 3.5mm jacks, just use that to avoid "Double Amping" since you have the option.
Edit: And you were the wrong person to respond to, whoops.
