So I have an ATH-M50. Is this a worthwhile jump or should I wait and spend $1k for DAC and AMP?

lastzeroAre you planning to upgrade your headphone? Cause I don't see a reason to spend $1k for a DAC and Amp for the M50.

lastzeroM50 doesn't need a AMP. Also IMO M50 doesn't warrant anything else then a good soundcard. If you're ready to spend 200$ on a dac/amp you should look into getting a more demanding pair of headphones.

lastzeroNo. ATH-M50 are very easy to drive. You won't see much of a change with those. Now if you had the ATH-900 that would be a different story.

zmosherUse good AMPs are not for sound change.
Some high cost amps make different sound(HDVA 600, 800, A1, etc) But it's cuzed by add cheap resistors at the end of the nice circuit , that makes high output impedance High impudence Makes FR change with not liner impedanced headphones, IEMs (HD600, HD650, T1, HD800, Er4, etc)
Good amp makes just amplifying, not changing Just Feels different volume
If Your system Without defects, Add good Amp do not change anything but the volume
But Some case can get better bass, be cause Poor amp made bass lose at low impedance headphones before change the amp In this case Get different sound with amp But it cuz by defects are cured, not cuzed by magic amp
You can feel better with new high cost amp, but real change is nothing(too small to sense it if they works well) Myths, Snake Oils are not for Real better sound

zoomorphIt's more often the case that the guy who can speak more than one language who is more educated, more marketable, and more valuable, even if the second language is not up to par as native speakers.

gattaca224You mean that someone who speaks English in non-English countries may be more valuable than someone who doesn't. For someone who speaks English in North America, there's practically no value in knowing a second language, unless you are specifically interested in being able to communicate with poor people elsewhere in the world.

zoomorphI guess given your background, you must not see what I see. I'm an engineer, and now I'm pursuing my Master's. I used to work at Europe's largest engineering company at their R&D location in NYC. When I graduated during the midst of the recession, uneducated people most affected by the recession were crying about foreigners taking US jobs and how the country is less competitive. Instead, what they should have been doing is recognize that the world is changing and they need to keep up with it, rather than blaming everyone else.
When it came to the high paying jobs in the STEM fields, the US *needed* foreign workers to fill a work force deficit and to remain competitive globally. I saw this from my own experience, and it also bears out through national statistics. There just weren't enough natives who could do the difficult high tech jobs. Many of the engineers at my company were foreign born, and they possess skills that were sought after. And because this was a global company, the executives were foreigners themselves or they could speak multiple languages, because their customers don't all speak English.
I guess all I'm saying is that be careful of who you disrespect; they're the ones who will end up putting you in your place. You know there's truth to what I'm saying when people who think like you become a caricature. Here, take a look: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/murica
The world is changing. America is changing. You can either keep a respectful, open mind and improve your skills to remain competitive in a global economy, or watch the world leave you behind while you lament how great the past used to be.

gattaca224They will put us in our place NOT because we disrespect them but - for the opposite reason! We respect them so much that we import them endlessly into our countries, give them everything for free out of our charity, and let them walk all over us. Don't tell me that giving them even more unreciprocated respect would be in my best interest.
Foreign workers are popular here largely because we've reduced our own progeny to sniveling liberals with no useful skills and high levels of entitlement.

VinnI will at some point too but more pointing out that my friend who has Schiit Mjolnir and Gungnir says the jump from no Dac + amp is a lot more than to O2 Dac + Amp. He says it's better to save money and just go for that.
Headphones will come at some point but I'm curious is the difference noticeable with the M50s using the O2 Dac + amp.

lastzeroI doubt you will hear the difference, especially with something like the M50. Like most ppl say get better Cans 1st then Amp then Dac. Dac difference is really subtle and very subjective to each person.
