I've heard stories that DFR doesn't drive HD6xx very well.
I have X2 as well and use it for games that has explosions (e.g. BF1, Farcry series), and pop music that has lots of beats but only simple sounds (bass, drum, elec. guitar, normal voice). That punchy badass mid-bass is really fun, and shockingly good in reproducing rifle crack sound in games. But it seems to fall short for detail.
I use HD 6xx for complex music only, especially those that have a lot of instruments, such as a full orchestra, or quartet, or when the music emphasize on the details. I'll just quote Nwavguy for my impression: " It didn’t make a strong first impression. To me, they’re warm, mellow, and rather laid back. It’s neither sterile or analytical. They seem to remove glare, sibilance, harshness and other obvious flaws that are so common in many (especially pop) recordings and somehow reveal more of the music. "
Is it worth buying (along with a decent amp)? Yes, because it will take you to a whole new listening experience, and then you would be able to use that experience as a reference when looking for other headphones.
Natively out of my computer's motherboard port, it can reach 50-60 dB. Lol I even use it with my 2DS sometimes.
But saying an Objective 2 is a "bare minimum" is very far from the truth.
HE-400i: Fast. Soundstage? Immense. Comfort is great. Very demanding in power. Bass quantity: lowest in this lot. Bass quality/extension: Excellent. Overall sound: fantastic, towards neutral, 0 fatigue. A little wider, surrounding sound. Surrounded, stadium like bass is also excellent.
6XX: Vocals: Excellent. Soundstage: narrow. Not too demanding in power. Bass: more than both the Philips and Hifiman. Overall sound is a little narrower than the Hifiman but very commanding. Comfort: a little less; tighter clamping. Some fatigue in longer sessions. Only some. Sound more front centered compared to Hifiman.
X2: can't comment but I think it may be a little inferior to both the others. Just my thought. No, haven't tried so it's just my perception.
I must tell you though that the 6XX is better in a way that it needs no mods. I've heavily modified all my cans. The senns are the only ones that don't require it. I'd choose these if I'm more into electronic music. Overall I think this would be the best pick.
If you're looking for more bass, you'll surely need to change the pads of the Hifiman.
My frame of reference: I acutally own the X2 & HD600, I listen to all kinds of genres, and I use the HD600 for most (HD6XX incoming just because I've heard the HD650, preferred it slightly, and wanna mod one of the two).
I preferred the Senns even when I had a lower end amp/DAC. The X2 bass hits harder but it's also more sloppy, it's slightly more fun with some things but not enough to warrant owning both or for me to prefer it overall. The only reason I haven't sold them is gaming...
The soundstage the X2 throws is a lot better for online gaming, and I like plugging the V-Moda BoomPro mic right into it rather than dealing with multiple wires etc. If I wasn't gaming or was badly cash strapped I'd sell them off, but they aren't that expensive so w/e.
There's cheaper headphones with decent soundstage you can get solely for gaming, I kept tht X2 only cause I had them already, and do use them occasionally off my old Nexus 7.
