I'm sorry, but Massdrop's system is incredibly dumb imo. What makes more sense? 1. Order 45,500 units from Senn and tell people to wait 5-6 months for their arrival. or 2. Order 3,500 units from Senn each month and tell people they'll ship them by the end of the month. Both Senn and MD know that option 2 would work perfectly well, but it's easier for them to enjoy a big payday ASAP instead of fulfilling their obligations ASAP. I would have ordered the 6XX already if they didn't show such disrespect for their costumers. No way in hell i'm waiting 200 days for some headphones to arrive after I've paid for them. It's some type of torture if you ask me.

Rodnessthat's exactly what they did. The 45,000 number is the total number they've made since they started doing these drops.

vanstinatorhmmm if that's the total number for all the drops then my numbers in relation to the waiting period were not accurate, but my point still stands:
Do more drops of small quantities and fulfill your obligations before you do the next drop.

RodnessSmall drops = price increase. Mass production always favor larger bulk orders. Larger bulk orders allow lower costs from suppliers and so forth.

HeavyboxerBut both MD and Senn *know* people will buy it anyway at some point.
If you really want to get smart you can divide it into 5 drops published *at the same time* . If you join the January drop you get it in February, if all the slots for the Feb distribution drop were taken by people who joined before you then you join the March distribution drop etc.
That way you can still make a big order because the same amount of people will join, the only difference is priority between clients.
This is their best selling item of all times, i would agree with you if this was some unknown product.

RodnessAh, your logic rings true IF the Sennheiser factory in ireland built nothing else except the 6XX. However, my current HD25-1-II is also from Ireland so that tells me that they produce other models. I'm quite sure that they have a limited number of production lines and employees, and they need to schedule in 6XX in batches for one of their lines (change out tooling, get new components in for assembly, test equipment, etc) which is why delivery times look to be months away.
40K units seem like a lot, but to a large factory, I think it's still a small run... especially if they're reducing their profit margins to cater to the bulk order.
All this is just my 2 cents and I could be talking out of my arse.

HeavyboxerNow it says 87,344 SOLD (yesterday it was 44.2K) . Is this a bug on the site?

exitmrhatUnless it's a one time/final build order by MD to sell as stock, it's prolly an error

RodnessThey save on some cost like logistic and cost of funds. Since they got the money from you upfront, that some money they can use elsewhere. If they didn't get the money from you upfront, they have to use their line of credit with the bank for working capital, which cost money (interest). It's the little things like this that help them save costs. 3500 unit each months is more hassle so more cost to them. 45500 unit locked in is cheaper

RodnessYou don't actually pay for them until they ship.

RayFThat's not what Massdrop says on the HD6xx page: 'After the drop ends, payment will be collected and the group’s order will be submitted to the vendor up front, making all sales final. '

exitmrhatThat might make more sense considering their business model—I never noticed when my account was debited. I guess the moral of the story is, if cash flow is an issue, MD’s ways may not be for you. I’d add that their is a certain amount of hype and hysteria surrounding this and other Audio drops. I get the distinct impression people are occasionally jumping in over their heads for fear of missing out. In my opinion MD takes advantage of that by applying unit and time limits. My advise is don’t get caught up in the crazines—the deals aren’t that good, and your life won’t change dramatically if you do or don’t get this or that drop. There’s no point in going hungry for a a pair of headphones or a tube amp. Just say’n...

RayFActually you're spot on, Massdrop should be avoided especially by guys like me with strong OCD. I lost a weekend over this 1 month ago when this was last on; I got in and then cancelled in the last minute. Then I regretted it. Now I'm in again...

exitmrhatI don think you’re alone in that—you can practicly feel the angxiety in many of the comments I’ve read on this drop—even mine! Hope you get yours this time around and then maybe take a break from MD, enjoying your music—which is the real point, right?
