Sennheiser PC37X randomly goes bad after disconnecting the cable ?
Greetings, Yesterday I was using my headset like normal with my macbook, just listening to music and on a call with people like usual, and the headset was perfectly fine. The stock wire that came with the headset is extremely long and yesterday it annoyed me very much that it kept getting tangled with itself, so I decided to see if the cable is replaceable. I pulled out the cable from the headset and saw the adapter, and looked online for a replacement. Upon plugging it back in, the audio sounded extremely muffled and washed out. Im not sure what I did wrong to make it mess up like that as I've always taken good care of it, ive had it for about 2 years and its always just been chilling on my desk, but anywho I thought the cable just went bad and ordered a replacement. The replacement came, and the issue is still persistant, so I am not sure what the issue is I've tried multiple different headsets and the issue is not with the port, and I also tried it with my windows laptop and...

I'm now realizing that high end headphones are made to be paired with an amp but I have no interest in using an amp since I will be using them mostly on the go.
So my question is, can these be used without an amp and just plugged directly into my phone? And if I were to buy these could anybody recommend a cable with inline mic/volume control thats compatible with these headphones and a carrying case that they would fit in?
Also if anybody has any suggestions of other over the ear headphones that may better suit my needs, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.
For on-the-go use I'd recommend closed backs or similar headphones such as the Hifiman Edition S. The white color comes in at 149$ at amazon, and they are over-ear portable cans that have covers you can use to switch from open to closed, decreasing sound leakage a fair good amount. They also have a standard 3.5mm jack on them for easy cable replacement.
Good luck finding the right headphones for you!
I use an Audio Technica M40x - and I find them pretty good for the price. These are closed back, have a reasonably flat frequency response, and can be snagged for under $100 (have even seen deals at $75)
Also, you may want to think of investing in DAPs (digital audio players) that have a built in amplifier and DAC. These are portable and can be used on the go with your headphones. I use a Fiio X3 (2nd generation), and find it a good combination with my M40x.
If you have the ability, please listen to any headphone before you buy them. Sound preferences are very personal - and hence each one's mileage may vary.
Good luck with your search.
I'm leaning towards the Hifiman edition s. I like the versatility it provides by giving you the option to use them as an open back or closed back.
