fifthswitchNo impressions yet but for gaming you generally want a dynamic driver, it acts as a point source. Planar and E-stats have a certain 'wall of sound' soundstage that isn't quite the same in imaging, usually. K7xx is a good open headphone for gaming. 'MadLustEnvy' has a guide for gaming headphones as a thread on Head-Fi, its pretty extensive.
Cole104Do you have further readings or links regarding why dynamic drivers are better for gaming? I was looking into getting STAX, but might look into something more like the HD 800 S if dynamic is better for gaming.
DominusVobiscumAfter reading, I think it's somewhat mixed, but personally I concluded that the HD 800 or 800 s was my best bet since I do audio editing as well - it'll double as a fantastic studio headset and gaming set.
fifthswitchI love these for gaming. (I have the original 950's). Imaging is utterly superb, soundstage is large enough. I can pinpoint directional cues very well with these cans, if that is what you are after.
With the stock pads (new pads make them warmer apparently) these are pretty neutral, airy, open cans. So if you're going for head-rumbling-explosion-type gaming cans, these are not for you. But if you want detailed, accurate and open sounding audio? Yes, these are great.
illramI appreciate the feedback. After all was read and said, I think, just like with microphones, I really need to be able to test them out before I buy. I'll stay on the fence for the time being.
fifthswitchE-stats and planars just feel different, like a wall of sound. Typically the driver has a grill on the other side, but between your ear and the driver there is a complete seal, unlike the open baffle of many dynamic headphones. So dynamics do tend to sound more spacious. Definitely check out MadLustEnvy's guide if you're interested, HD800 is definitely on there, no idea about Stax though. HD800 has a massive soundstage and great imaging, would definitely be pinpoint with details. Never heard of anyone using E-stats for gaming, and I don't do gaming that requires spatial awareness, so I just put on headphones that make good sound for my platformers and metroidvania. When I used to, I remember my old k7XX was way more reliable for hearing something and immediately knowing where it was than ZMF blackwood and HE-400i. Meant as a reply to Dominus Vobiscum. I wish I had links, but all I can give is some experience, logic, and someone else's gaming headphone guide.
