After MiTo first sprung onto the mech keys scene in 2014 with the Pulse custom keycap set, a string of hits followed. There was Sci-Fi, Overcast, Godspeed, 3run, Canvas, Legacy, and of course, the biggest of them all: Laser Read More
Cash Grab anyone? Must be quite profitable to keep seeing laser merch getting churned out. What's next... laser themed shoes? Hand bags? Glasses? BUY! BUY! BUY! Open your wallets friends, conspicuous consumption is King!
The whole point of Massdrop is to offer a group buy to get a discount on what you would normally pay retail. Knowing what a polyester hoodie can be produced in China for, asking $80 is a bit much don't you think? I'm all for capitalism, I'm just pointing out the obvious. Based on the other comments I'm clearly not alone in my thoughts. I did purchase the GMK laser keyset (love it), and although not cheap, I see the time that went into the design and production of the colors and molds. Anyone on the other hand can produce a t-shirt. No hard feelings, just my 2 cents.
BlueCrownedI don't know about a Gravity Falls keycap set, but I'd buy the hell out of a Final Space keycap set.
I need me a Mooncake artisan keycap bad!
The colors and Japanese text fits it. But the sunset is more outrun/synthwave/retrowave.
This who laser novelty keycap set is grabbing cyberpunk references from Blade Runner and Akira but then throws in a whole bunch of other 80's references like Back to the Future, Sunset, Initial D (funny enough was set in the 90's, just the AE86 Trueno was an 80's car), RAD BMX movie, cassette tape, etc. It used to have space invaders novelties, which is a bummer since those weren't made due to licensing issues. IMO, I would have just made some other sort of pixelated alien. I'm sure nobody would have really known the difference.
@MiToI'd say you're wrong calling it cyberpunk, instead I believe it's more Synthwave/Retrowave
synthwave (/outrun) is about an alternative past (1980's ) (see hotline miami)
- commonly featuring laser grids, deloreans, clean lines, fractured sunsets etc.
cyberpunk is about an alternative future (see blade runner or altered carbon)
To my eye, the clothes have a style indicative of the synthwave/outrun aesthetic, and don't resemble cyberpunk
- commonly featuring, dystopian visuals (hypercapitalism/dictatorship/lots of advertisements), weapons, crowded skylines, attractive women and sometimes digital body augmentations.
I'd be more than happy to discuss and learn though!
(the clothes look pretty damn cool, don't know if my wallet could handle it yet though XD)
BlueCrownedConsidering his last "easter egg", I gave it a shot and called the number. Got greeted by Toyota Material Handling. And several digits missing there? LASER-GMK is 8 numbers, you cannot have a legit phone number with 8 digits. The first 7 numbers will be the phone number. I only dropped off the last number.
Indeed. It might not have happened without Massdrop, but it 100% would not have happened without MiTo or GMK and yet their logos are not on these products (the letters in the phone number are not at all the same thing as a brand logo). Stranger Things wouldn't exist without Netflix, but that doesn't mean "Netflix" has to appear in the show. Even if Laser happened through Massdrop, does that warrant Massdrop having their logo on the final product? If MiTo requested that, sure. But if Massdrop demanded that, or set that as part of their conditions, then Massdrop is imposing themselves on to the creative work for the purpose of self-gain. I suspect, similarly to what happened with the Halo switches. Of course, Massdrop is a company that needs to make gains. But that shouldn't necessitate compromising the integrity of what they're producing and what artists are producing through them. Obviously there's a fairly decent backlash for this design decision (maybe design imposition) which Massdrop would probably be better off not having. Name on the tag is great, just like Fruit of the Loom or Hanes or Gildan's would do. But not this. Unless, again, MiTo wants that.
Apostate.DExactly what I thought. It would be a no-brainer instant purchase otherwise, but I'm not paying a premium to be a walking advertisement for MassDrop.
