The 6xx product description page states that they’re made in Ireland. The page for the 58x does not, so these must be coming out of China (I know it doesn’t really matter...but it matters)?

Aja12The prototypes are confirmed to be made in Ireland. The production tools for all the 600-line headphones are located in Ireland. Tools for plastic injection moulding cost upwards of $30,000 alone. It makes no sense at all to build up a production line for just 5000 units anywhere else.

HortenI know that the prototypes were made in Ireland, but final production locale hasn’t been confirmed by Massdrop, and it’s not listed in the product description (like it is with the 6xx).
Everything in the 5 series, including my 598’s, is made in China. I can’t imagine the production facility there wouldnt be a viable option for the initial run of 5000 units, especially since the only way Massdrop has so far explained getting the cost down to $150 is the packaging (China production sure would go a long way).

Aja12The 580 was made in Ireland. Look at the 58X. Does it look more like some 599 or more like a 600? The 600 series, including the 58X, are completely different in build than the 5 series.

Massdrop has not confirmed anything. You’re making an assumption based on pre-production models. These same pre-production models are being sent to “reviewers” in hard cases similar to the 6xx. We know for a fact that we are not getting this type of packaging for the final production run. So I’m not taking anything about the preproduction model as final.

Aja12Apart from the grills, painting and the transducer, the HD 580 and HD 58X are pretty much identical.

HortenCool man, well since you’re doing what no Massdrop or Sennheiser rep has so far done, confirming that the final production units will be made in Ireland, maybe Massdrop can now update the product description page to include the fact that they’re “made in Ireland”, just like the 6xx product page clearly states?

bradrWait, so they will ship from Ireland to the USA, only to get shipped back to Ireland, the UK or Europe to those buyers and the EU members will have to pay import duty? You could live next door to the factory and pay import duty. That's madness.
