I just got the 2C version and it's as loud as my NFB.11. It has a nice solid build and sound is good so I imagine this is a level up. I will also be sure to upgrade to a Burson opamp.
It's of debateable merit, but still if a DAC goes up to 96k or 192k, shouldn't the audio path likewise not stop at 20hz-20khz. But rather extend out to 30 or 40k? Otherwise why bother with higher samplerates? Whether you are able to hear that high varies from person to person. When I was younger I certainly could hear past 20k. However this is not the real reason to go for higher sample rates and audio pathway with a transfer function extending out past 20k. Even if you cannot hear that high, you will hear the lowpass filter's effects kicking in well before it's specced corner frequency. If you design for 30khz corner frequency than you are well out of the way. And the golden ears guys like George Martin will hear the difference.

actually, due to the Nyquist theorem, in the best case scenario a device with 192kHz samplerate can only playback up to 96kHz. You effectively need the sample rate to be twice the highest frequency you wish to produce. The higher samplerates such as 96k and 192k are frequently utilized not to garner ultrahigh frequency information, but rather to move the corner frequency of the antialiasing filter, and the aliasing artifacts themselves out of the range of human hearing. This is not because you actually hear the filter. But it can induce phase smear in the top end which may sound brittle and harsh. I actually own equipment with 192k samplerate, and 50k bandwidth. Even with my crappy hearing I can hear a benefit. Mostly a very clear treble with a distinct edge on details, without sounding liek a treble knob has been cranked up.

Your Nyquist assertion is accurate, I didn't mean to be vague. By "at that level" I meant greater than the general threshold of human hearing at 20kHz. I've had gear claiming 40khz and don't really notice much on the top end. The only consistent benefit among properly sourced hi-res I've been able to discern is a clearer fundamental, slightly better transients and a greater sense of the recording space (close mic, live, small venue, etc..). Again things probably not worth it to most folks, I will argue CD quality beats lossy compression until I die however.
price wise this is comparable to an NFB-11, also high power amp. how does this compare to the NFB? looks like the NFB has a better dac?
This vs the M9XX from Grace?
qu11355
M9XX appears to have a slightly weak amp while this has a weak dac. I don't own M9xx myself. Why not get a separate class-A amp and a good dac?
I have been using this unit for around 6 months with K7xx and Hd6xx. While the amp section is great, the dac itself is a terrible performer. It has no attack and has poor dynamics and details. When I feed it dsd signal (through Audirvana) the dac performs even worse. Now I have a Aune X1s (occassionally Fiio X5ii) feeding signal to this unit and this combo is pretty good. However if I wanted just a pure class A amp, I could have gone with Nuforce HA-200 (in fact I've ordered it too).

Have you tried a burson opamp?

No, I sold the amp ultimately and am into hybrids and tubes now.

Parts of the following video is relevant for 3U unit. If the difference between HPA-3U & HPA-3U+ is just the dac then this information might be useful. I must also say that though there very few reviews about HPA-3U they were all overwhelmingly positivie. Reviews about previous generation products are also really positive.
How does this compare to the Grace M9XX ?

Whats the difference with this "plus" model?
Load 2 more comments
So technically the DAC part on the U+ is implemented with a new DAC chip. There are no reviews of the U+ that I can find compare the two versions
Boomboommadafaka
This seems to be the case. Thanks. the "+" model brings the Cirrus Logic CS4398 D/A chip, whereas the "non +" has the Texas Instruments DSD1793 D/A.
BTW, only the "+" model is listed on the manufacturer's website, whereas all the australian retailers have only the "non +" models.
Had this unit for a week about two months ago. I liked it quite a bit. It wasn't mind blowing, but very good for the price. it's very versatile. It sounded very good with: Grado SR225e, Sennheiser HD800, innateck iems, Shure SRH840, Fostex THX00 (in fact I'd call it exceptional for the THX00), HiFiMan HE400i, EMU Walnut, Audeze LCD2, Koss KSC75.
I'd say it's slightly better than the old 4396 Modi, but s little below the Grace m9XX as a DAC (just slightly). Amp is a little bit better than the Magni2U. It's slightly warmer and less harsh than the M2U stack. If I didn't already own a m9XX, I'd have considered it for my office setup.
If anybody has any questions I'll try to answer as best I can from memory and notes.

Looks like they also moved the cooling vents from the side of the case to the top and added 2 large fins vs many smaller fins.

@Toothfixer @fjrabon. This is my first major dac/amp setup (after my current Fiio Q1). I am also new to Hi-Fi equipments as well. I have already bought a K7xx from the recent drop. So i'm considering both Modi/Magni uber stack and M-stage. Sadly there isn't much information available about M-stage floating in the internet which is making me nervous :-( . Any impressions, opinions & suggestions comparing M-stage and M/M-Uber in terms of sound quality, build quality, flexibility, longevity would be of great help
2800 mA at 32Ω……plug your IEMs in and they will BURN
Sean0368
Yes, at full volume they will damage iems. Though that's the case with almost all full size amps. It's a good thing there's a thing in the front called the volume knob.
Wow, I kind of like its aesthetics. Too bad I'm impatient, and don't want to wait a month. I'd probably cancel my order of the JDS Labs Element. Oh well, maybe this will be a future purchase.
TwelveWings
I get the impatience, but this is certainly an upgrade over the element and any other O2/ODAC based unit.
On a spec level, it appears to be mostly the same as a combined Schiit Modi/Magni uber. Same inputs, same outputs, but in one tidy package. The Matrix is modestly more powerful in the amp department, and has a slightly lower SNR (but both are well beyond the point of being able to hear anything but a black background). No word on whether the Matrix has a linear power supply like the Schiit does.
Something that can compete with the O2/ODAC and the Schiit stack, wrapped up in one tidy package. And in brushed black aluminium. I like it. Overall, I'd actually recommend this thing for the price if you're okay with the added premium over other options, but shipping as always kills the value here for me as a Canadian. Pity, guess I'll wait for the Schiit show.
FObjects
PSU is still LM317 + LM337 like the previous versions, so it is linear and bipolar.
Any one know haw it dos copmared to audio gb nfb 11
I've been itching to try this one out, looks like a much improved version of the original M-Stage. More optimized-looking layout, more SMD passive components instead of through-hole, using the chassis for heat-sinking instead of little soldered-on sinks. I wonder what that extra 16V Rubycon in the back is for.
I found something on head-fi but that was it http://www.head-fi.org/products/matrix-m-stage/reviews/13475 or well, there is other sources as well, but I am not as familiar with them. But I would still like to know more about it than what I currently have if I am to place an order.. Tho it is kinda tempting as my dac is acting weird as hell atm and schiit is not really helping out with offering suggestions to try.
Any reviews of this
