Exact same issue described by @theXAKARI USB C is defective, and Massdrop has 0 replacements. Either QA was skipped or the defect was known and shipped to meet the deadline.
Update: Coworker also received a defective USB C connector.
Edit: +1 start for Massdrop providing a $20 credit for me to purchase a new USB-C connector so i can try to fix the cable myself.
gr347wh173n0r7hSaw you on reddit too. I also had the same problem. Such a shame I’m choosing to send it back and order a cable from mechcables directly next time.
*Edit just realized they only offered me $15 credit to keep the defective cable, but they gave you $20. Interesting
Same issue as the other commenters with the USB-A to USB-C cable, which is super unfortunate as I love the cable color combo.
+1 to Massdrop support. They were quick in offering me a refund without having to ship the cable back to them. I'll probably use that money to try and fix the cable myself.
Cable just showed up, USB A to USB C and the USB C does not actually connect to any of my boards. I have a Massdrop Laser ALT, which this cable was clearly ordered for. When you try to plug it in, the connector goes in 1/4 of the way and no further, will not actually seat in any of the 4 devices I have tried, all of which accept any other USB C connector just fine. I have no idea what is going on here.
theXAKARIThis is from another user in the Carbon Mechcables drop, which also had issues with the type-c connectors.
"I put it under the scope and found that the main problem was the side spring clips were impacted, basically preventing them from pushing back and clipping onto the mating edge of the opposing USB-C connector."
I'm willing to bet Mechcables had already finished these cables (drops were about 2 weeks apart) when all the info of the bad cables were coming out. This is my second cable to have this problem from Mechcables, and I'm really afraid since I have another already ordered.
Luckily Massdrop support is good about getting you a refund, and maybe Mechcables will pay more attention to QA when they start seeing the amount of returns the lack of QA is generating.
I received this cable and the USB-C end did not fit any of my USB-C devices, they couldn't offer a replacement so I was given a full refund and told to throw them out.
So this is my second cable from Mechcables with a bad type-c connector. The last one was from the Carbon drop, so I'm hoping that they've since resolved the issue since these purchases are from approximately 3 months ago.
I gave Mechcables the benefit of the doubt and ordered from the /dev/tty drop (this was before the second bad cable showed up). I have 3 working type-c cables from Mechcables, if I get one more bad type-c connector then I'll be avoiding their drops entirely; I'm 2 for 5 with bad cables, hitting 3/6 will be an obvious sign of the complete disregard to QA. How is their quality control not testing these cables before they leave? I'm just hoping they pay some attention to the Carbon drop issues and this drop. Really getting ridiculous that this many people are having to return beautiful cables because clearly no one is testing these cables.
The Build quality for the cable is amazing , but
The Type-C port on my cable doesn't fit properly into any Type-C port, so I have to return it.
Massdrop is forcing me to return it on my dime to verify my issue before they issue my refund.. for a cable which cost less to build than the price for return shipping ... what a hassle.
Edit: MD refunded me!
