I have the matrix 2 and it's great. It was also a lot cheaper, though (~$70?). If the pads on these are anything like the matrix 2 I definitely recommend getting replacement pads. I used brainwavz hybrid and although they are a tad large for these headphones they are super comfortable compared to the stock pads. I have a few other nicer headphones, but these are my go-to for watching movies in the living room. This new version looks like they upgraded the internals and some of the build materials. I would definitely jump on these if I didn't already have a pair of the older ones. Sound on the old ones is a bit veiled/lack-of-detail compared to more expensive headphones, but if you need wireless and comfortable I definitely recommend.
wontonotnowI have the matrix 2 and as much as I loved them, they leaked more external noise than any sealed over the ear headphone I've ever owned. It was actually astonishing to me. But I got a set of replacement pads, and... bliss.
I can't speak to the matrix 3, but the matrix 2 are the best sounding bluetooth headphones I ever listened to, and that means they're the only ones I own. I have read that the matrix 3 sound different than the matrix 2, but I can't remember where I read that, nor what the conclusion was. I may join this one only because my wife appears to have appropriated my matrix 2 headphones, and I get "the look" when I start asking for them back.
deweysdecimalI've read that Brainwavz HM5 velour pads work, I want to get a set for my Matrix2's but not for $35 (half of what I paid for the M2), so I'm patiently waiting for a sale.
Demi9ODYes, they're closed. What you see on the back is some kind of fabric. In the last incarnation, they had something that looked like it was carbon fiber but it really was printed on soft plastic. I will say that I upgraded the ear pads as suggested by someone else, and the result was fantastic. NOW they're reasonably isolating. They don't fit nicely in the case anymore, but that's a fair tradeoff.
Demi9ODIf it's like the matrix 2, the outside is a fabric covering the cups, but it is closed. This version looks like a different fabric (the matrix 2 was fake carbon fiber), but should be closed-back as well.

wontonotnowthese are closed back. I was able to make HM5 pads fit on them with some adjustment.
