I thought I would give it a little respect when I mention that these speakers sound like a $300. But you guys mention that it's a poor quality, and that it's a $150 made quality. Wow... I have heard of Mission speaker before and it's not my taste. I actually think it's horrible. Gave me a big headache. Not because it's loud but because of the horrible sound coming from the speakers. Sounded like woodstick banging on a plastic containers. This is why I have requested Massdrop to play a demo so I can make sure that I recall that moment correctly.
Over fifteen years ago speakers are outdated. It not so easy to be accepted or like in the modern times. Unless it's a real vintages and have great superior sound. Such old technology cannot be matched with the modern tech.

The 796SE looks to be discontinued by Mission?
It doesn't match to their current product lines, and I see reviews online dating back several years.

bitweaselYeah they were discontinued 4 years ago, like many products on Massdrop. I would steer clear of anything by Mission as their quality control and cabinet construction is pretty low end. I bet the cost to produce these speakers is below $150.
If you're going to spend $1000 on something, you'd be much better off with something by Elac or a good set of second hand Totem.

I see 796SE original price is $1800, search and find in China they are still selling at RMB16300 (about $2500). My partner called them but they didn't explain why they sell here at this price. Thinking a headphone cost $1500-$3000, it's really worthy to get a pair hi-end speaker.

you can go ahead and do that doogie. I have a few setup. first one is the svs ultra theater system in my living room with the oppo 205 and monolith 7. which also have my pc hook up to it. second is my ls50 active in my bedroom with denon 7200 also with my pc and many other connection. and the third one is the elac uni-fi ub5.which also is connected to the denon reciever. and yes i do have the lsr30x connected to my son pc with an audio-gd r2r-11.
you guy call me a troll or whatever you like. my question is: are you a diehard massdrop fan or associates??? :) my comment wasn't aggressive and all i did was request massdrop to play a demo so that all of us know what we are getting from the speakers. it's funny to see how some of the so call member react to a simple request so negatively. you sometime wonder, are they really a member or something else hahahaha.
my request only benefit those member who is interested in the speaker and doesn't know what they are getting themself into and with a demo, to let the buyer know what is to expected.
ps with high quality compression nowaday, the sound quality can retain its great quality and you won't be able to tell the different unless you are a professional.

Hear hear! I have yet to hear a headphone that remotely comes close to the resolve of a quality loudspeaker. But in all honesty, they buy speakers after grad because they (assumedly) have their own place and can afford to blast them.

well I’d have to concede speakers do everything and more which you describe. Ain’t no way it’s still gonna beat out headphones for the sheer intimacy of drowning in headphone bliss. Go ahead. I dare you. Plug in and listen to something revelatory. Or just listen to Rubber Soul or Revolver.

Massdrop, can you connect Mission 796se loudspeakers to your good dac and amp and play a ten minutes sample on youtube for us. I would like to hear how the speaker sound like to see if it is worth $1100. If I recall correctly, these speakers sound horrible. So please, prove me wrong. Hook a pair of your speakers, dac, and amp and make it sound good and play a sample for us on youtube ok.

Good to see Mission speakers in this drop, also surprised. Visited IAG a few times in early 2010s and heard Mission 796 is inspired by the car Lamborghini, luxury style, attractive, great performance. Not sure because of this, IAG boss bought a lamborghini or because IAG boss got a lamborghini then ask engineer to design 796SE, anyhow they are close related. It's designed by Peter Comeau, the British famous designer. Usually Mission sell through distributors, not sure why they are here this time, possibly they see the trend Massdrop is attracting more and more audiophiles and they start new channel.

Am I the only who find it absurd, weird and awesome at the same that Massdrop is offering international shipping for floorstanding loudspeakers but doesn't ship the Yamaha HS8 -bookshelf- loudspeakers /monitors internationally?

morniteme either. my category is mainly low-Fi (^_^, low price portable models), but I know Mission speakers are really good, I have visited IAG a few times and see their products, that time I work for one dealer company. I would show my support for this drop.

Recently picked up a set of Mission 767 + LFAU booster amp bass control unit. Manufactured in the early 90's so there is little to no relation to current speakers or company. The 767's are an amazing sounding unit and high quality build.
Very detailed sound, excellent imaging, and powerful but musical bass.

RTi12's for left/right, RTi8 for center (blended much better with the 12's than a CS20 I started with), and FXiA6's for front/rear surround with the SVS sub. Using a Pioneer SC-1323-K receiver for control. Accumulated over a 3 year period through special sales, discontinued sales, open/damaged packaging items, etc.. Very contented with the result.

I think these are no longer in production, but Mission has always built great speakers. I shopped these a few years ago and thought they were pretty good, but ended up buying Paradigm 100's (V3) as a better match to my setup. For those who can't be arsed to Google, here's a review from Hi-Fi+

Lsh12I think you are correct. This model is no longer in production, as far as I can tell. They are no longer shown on the Mission website. They were introduced in 2010 ?? 2011?. The non "SE" version was introduced in 2008 according to that Hi-Fi+ review you shared with us. (I suspect that review was also the source of some of the description used for this drop. ie. the line about the 753 model, which isn't particularly true).
Does anyone know why they are in this drop? Did Massdrop get some sort of close-out special? The price is a fraction of what the MSRP was while they were in production.
