Have and love this bag. Great day pack or commuter bag. Only change I would like is make the padded sleeve removable (but I would say this for all bags).
Great bags. I use the smaller cousin of this with the optional shoulder straps and it absolutely rocks as a summer hiking bag (although a tad smallish for what I often carry). No heat buildup at all compared to a typical small backpack so many typically use. Tempted to grab this one, but sizing aside the old one continues to do its job so well - not sure I need to spend the $$.
I would buy this but the one I have is still going strong after 30 years of constant use. In all that time I've only had to replace a zipper pull and get stitching on the hip belt fixed about a year ago.
I own the day pack, so id you plan on taking more than 5lbs of stuff in this bag you really should pay the extra 20 for the straps, I love my day pack, but sometimes i wonder if i should have just bought a bigger bag for the same price that has shoulder straps already...aka backpack.
I have this pack already, and would strongly advise adding both the strapettes as others have suggested, and Mountainsmith also has a rain cover for it which I also advise getting as the Cordura is really strong, but not waterproof.
