What is SpaceFN and why you should give it a try
The SpaceFN concept - setting up your space key as a layer switch when held - is probably one of the most useful tweaks in the keyboard hobby. Let me explain how it works. My SpaceFN article on kbd.news made some rounds recently - quite surprisingly given the age of this concept. This piece you're reading is a condensed version of the full post. One strange thing, however, is that the colored modifier keys are double-shots. On the other hand, the default keycaps appear to me to be laser-engraved with a slightly off-white fill. They still appear to be molded from the same profile, though.
All in all, it was a very satisfying purchase for being only my second MKB. I got it to replace the steelseries 6gv2 that I bought 5 years ago when I first decided to get a "nice" keyboard, and the extra desk space alone was worth the money. I'll have to delve into the reprogrammable keys some other time and discover what advantages that yields, but even without that capability it's a very good keyboard. The backplate is also sufficiently thick that the plastic body doesn't ruin the noise of the keycaps, and I get a very satisfying THUNK noise out of each spacebar press.
