DonVLike your comment below, I also totally agree that this lens is phenomenal for the money. I have the VR version and it out-performs the 70-300 5.6 from both Nikon and Tamron, which are both over $200+ more expensive.
That said, I want to reiterate Don's below comment that you'll need a monopod if you plan on using this in low light, since it is not the VR version (image stabilized). The aperture is just too narrow at 6.0 not to have VR, unless you're shooting at very high speeds (which you'll need a lot of light or high ISO for). If you plan on only using this lens at mid-day on sunny days, then it's a great deal and you won't need the monopod as you will have enough light. If you plan on using it in more varied situations (cloudy, etc.) up until the sun starts to set (even with VR, you will not have a wide enough aperture in most situations to get sharp shots at dusk), then you really need the VR version or to use it with a monopod/tripod.
Again, though, this is a fantastic lens at a fantastic price. If you cannot afford the VR version, then this is the way to go. It's an outstanding lens for the price, but just know that you'll struggle to get sharp pictures if it's not very bright outside and you're not stabilizing the camera somehow.
