What a great DAC at this price! I can understand the thread disappointment in the remote. I looked at it when unboxing and never even bothered using it. Volume knob is flimsy and no real low level listening is possible as cuff off is too high in my system.
But what a strong performer in terms of sound quality the DAC80 is! Resolution, soundstage, imaging, timing and speed. I have tried other DACs most much more expensive (factor 2-6 range) and since I really covet the SQ traits the DAC80 has to offer, I have found myself unimpressed with these other DACs. On the negative side the sound is quite sterile and dry but not in a good way - dry as in stop short, chalky ... bah >words<.
QUESTION: (since the manual is no longer available at Optoma). Does this unit bypass the preamp section when the volume is set to max (so that I can use another preamp with the DAC alone?)
Right now I am using it with a SS poweramp. But I am getting a dedicated preamp because of audiophile sadness with the preamp section in this unit. I wan´t to use the DAC80 for a while after though.
I absolutely love my Dac80! Maybe for the price there is nothing better. But since I have got other Dacs and will also buy something which is clearly better soon, this gem has to go. I will sell it if somebody is interested. The unit is black.

Thanks for your attention. Since the Dac still is fairly new, I would like to sell it for 300€. Are you in the EU?

I am open go negotiate, of course. Shipping depends on the destination (I am in Austria).
I just recently got my dac80 ( after a looong way through the customs etc). I'm quite surprised it has so many negative opinions here. I don't have any technical problems with my unit. The remote - well, I'm not going to use it. But the sound.... 270$ (including shipping ) it's something I would call a real bargain for that sound quality! I'm really happy with sound, and actually I'm positively impressed! I'm using coaxial input if that matters. Nothing bad I can say about this DAC. I really recommend it. Now I greatly enjoy my all albums anew, and my new set dac80+Lehmann Linear+good scotch single malt - it's a beautiful match!
Cheers!
I have had my DAC 80 for about 8 months now. I use it in a classic, high end, speaker based system in a properly designed room. ( see original post well down this list).
I noticed this is back for another drop at an even cheaper price and am letting some other hifi friends know about this.
Reading through the comments below, it appears that many are unhappy with the remote (fully agree - it is junk), and unhappy with the power down (never noticed as I don't bother powering down). Not many recent comments on the sound though so I thought I should pipe in again.
This is a really good sounding DAC. Read this whole thread and you'll see that most (not all) informed posters agreed that the DAC 80 sounds really good.
For the 250.00 asking price, if you are most concerned with having good sound, this is worth considering.
Does anymobody know how well this would go to gether with an Emotiva BasX A-100 amp (used with jumpers for headphones)? I can't find any detail about the amp's output impedance, given that the NuForce DAC's is a bit higher than normal.
AndyZilla
I can't speak from experience about the pairing, I'm a multibit fan, but I don't think the less efficient 100 ohms output will trouble the Emotiva driving headphones even without the jumpers installed. However, it could be a concern if your trying to drive 8 ohm inefficient speakers, something you may ask on the Emotiva forum about.
AndyZilla
Emotiva has just updated their site and mentioned an Input Impedance: 27 kOhms. It will work just fine :D
Do not buy this... I just got mine today and already disappointed. First powering off mentioned in several other comments are totally true. I can't get the unit to power off using the buggy remote and trying to power off the unit by holding down the nob will power it down but as soon as I let go it will turn back on, so the only way to actually turn it off is with the switch on the back. This doesn't bother me too much since I wasn't planing on turning it off all that often. There is a clicking noise when you mute or change to a different source. There is no way to determine the volume level if you use the remote. And most importantly, I bought it to connect it to my tv and use it with my LSR305s because it had a REMOTE and is a preamp. Do not expect the remote to work properly. The remote only picks up in very small angles and positions I mean it will work the first time and not work on the next click and also the buttons are very buggy. When I turn up the volume and want to lower it because i dont have any kind of indication of the signal registering or the volume level, holding down the volume down button will actually continue to raise it for some reason. At first the mute button was registering twice so basically the mute button wasn't functional. The sound quality seems to be great and does what it's supposed to (using optical not sure about usb). I would not recommend buying this if you're planning on using the remote.
What cables do I need to buy to connect this to the source (pc) and my amp?
ShadyMercenary
I believe it will come with the usb cable. You will need coaxial cables to hook it up to an amp.
ShadyMercenary
@Sammyboy0203 Believes that it comes with a USB cable, though it's not listed as being included in the description, so maybe or maybe not to that. The dac does appear to have a coaxial output, so either a coax cable or RCA cables, depending on your amp.
Does anyone know? Buying two items with massdrop. By choosing to ship abroad. Can it be sent in one package? With the only shipping costs? I want to buy Dekoni Premium Ear Pads for HD 58X & HD 6XX
AdamvVv
No they dont' put packages together, even if you buy same exact items. at least they responded no with my zippo lighters
Today I received this device. There is a problem. The off option does not work. This applies to the remote control and dac itself. The only option to turn off the device is to cut off the current using the switch on the back. Does anyone of you have a similar problem?

Never thought of that, I was just plan to not buy anything made by NuForce again. I left that DAC at work (which I don't use often) and using a different DAC at home now. May be I should contact MassDrop and see what they can do, but I throw away all the boxes and packaging of that thing already...
The_Dentist
Ok. I will try to do something with that. Nuforce has a service in my city. Maybe they will help and I will not have to send back my dac.
any warranty ?
ck.tan
As far as I know you contact MD and they will do the contacting the company and shit for you
Sammyboy0203
just an fyi, for the M8 i purchased from massdrop, massdrop would only cover 3 months for warranty. anything that happen after 3 months, you are on your own. but the manufacturer would likely entertain
After living with this for a while and getting a lot of audio glitches using USB, I've switched to optical, which works without problems.
I'm not tremendously impressed with the unit, but the remote volume control was the primary reason I purchased this unit. The remote is about as cheap as you can possibly find, but I did manage to train a learning remote with it.
All things taken together, it just doesn't feel like a polished, finished product, but more like a DIY effort. I would go with a different option given the choice again.
I am having issues with windows recognizing it and then not recognizing it. Usually fixed when I change the USB port it is connected to on the motherboard. Sometimes I have to restart, both which are annoying. I can't seem to find the solution yet.
Other than that I have been happy with how it sounds, dac80+ha200 much better than the matrix mpa2 I have.

Occasionally, my laptop looses the connection to the DAC 80. I found that simply unplugging, and pluggin back in, the usb cable restores the connection.
I got it from last drop too, I wasn't impressed with the quality of the sound and may be it is only me, I have a hard time turning on and off the unit using the front knob... any tricks on that?
I got this on the last drop and so far haven't been impressed. I'm hearing popping in the sound, it's not super loud or obvious, but it's enough to spoil enjoyment of it. Plus I'm unable to save settings in the control panel for the drivers. This is on Windows, via USB. I'm in touch with Optoma support and they're trying to help, I'll update this if they're successful but if not I'm thinking of returning it.
100 ohm output impedance?? Where do you find those cables? RCAs come in 50 and 75. Lose ~5% of the signal at an impedance mismatch.
Did anyone pair it with Bottlehead Crack and Sennheiser HD6XX / Fostex TH-X00? Thanks
I got this to mate with a Beyers A20. The DAC80 seems like a solid product albeit slightly dated. There seems to be a terrific amount of demand in the DAC market and increasing. Looking forward to see how this combo pair up with a hifiman HE560 and the Fischer Audio FA-011ae. Everything I read suggests the DAC80 to be an solid product when paired with a proper amp and of course the right set of cans. Curious to hear for folks with experience with this DAC. Cheers!
Good comments, good members.
Does it work with an iPhone 6s (via camera connection kit)? Has anyone tried?
NuForce is badly designed junk. Please don't give this company any money.

I think he was trying to help people. Maybe he didn't have all the facts, but none the less, I believe his intentions were good. That is plane to see. Some people like to personally attack others for their opinions. I try to be nice to people, because I like them to be nice to me. This idea is simple, and if it is not understood,???
hi pals, are these DOA? have an old Audiolab DAC still kicking XD is it possible to use 2 DACs? Want to use the Audiolab DAC with Audioquest DF v1.2 ,,,
DinoJoe
I use both the DAC-80 and an Explorer 2 (for MQA). I use both DACS for Tidal (easy to switch from within Tidal settings) and the DAC-80 when listening to my Oppo CD player via coax. The DAC -80 is much better for non-MQA.
Hello, maybe someone can tell whether there is a big difference between Audinst HUD-MX1 dac ? I have MX1 and to considering it is worth a renewal + get extra amp ?? Using DT 880

Lol thats gonna be my status man
LOL we‘ve all been there, you got me laughing so hard it made my day. Good luck with the search!
A week late to ship, charged $9.50 for FEDEX SMART POST shipping from 15min from my house. Took 5 days in transit, and USPS is currently unable to find my package. Massdrop is not responsible for USPS, but charging $9.50 for FedEx smart post is rediculous.
Shipping a $300+ package FedEx smart post in the first place is pathetic. I work in e-commerce, we won't ship a package over $15 ups mail innovations, and stopped using smart post entirely due to this sort of issue. If Massdrop is going to charge such high shipping charges, they have a hell of a lot of nerve using bargain basement services the way they do.
I may very well dispute these charges with American Express, as I never received the package and the tracking shows it wasn't delivered, and leave the other drops I've joined. I'm sure plenty of people see the deals here and think they will receive the product they pay for, good luck with that.
Massdrop, you should be ashamed of yourself charging $9.50 for the cheapest possible shipping method available to you. If you need to charge $10 more to make the drop profitable, don't lie and hide it in the shipping charge.
"Due to an unexpected delay, these orders may ship later than the original estimated ship date. Our apologies for any inconvenience. If we find that the drop is going to be delayed by more than 30 days, we will let you know."
I understand the issues that are faced by the kind of ordering done by Massdrop, but this is not an acceptable amount of information or time-frame for an update. There needs to be more of a follow up than "shrug, we'll contact you in a month if its going to be longer than that"
I've got an HA-200 for sale cheap which pairs perfectly with the DAC-80 if anyone is interested. Just reply with your email and I'll message you together with some pictures.
I got a one on the drop that shipped in April. It died after 6-7 uses. They sent a replacement which was DOA. Is any one else have issues?

chord mojo better than this? then everybody should get that, smaller , and portable!!!!
Sorry for late reply. I never had any luck with my remote but unit works fine by using back power switch. As in another post, I leave mine on all the time.
The only problem, other than remote, is the old windows laptop I use in my dedicated hifi room seems to screw up driver every couple of months and I have to re-install driver. Driver works flawlessly on my newer laptop but I want to utilize my older laptop for something. I'm a cheapskate :-)
Is anyone successfully using the optical audio input? I would like to use it to connect my TV optical output to DAC80 and then output to my speakers.
ashade_cunha
My optical from my laptop works nicely.
I'm probably not the only one who is wondering when they are going to ship this drop. I've sent a message to Massdrop support, they have told me they are aware of the delay and are investigating why the vendor is taking its sweet time. They'll update everyone via email once more information is available. Below is their message:
" Thanks for contacting Massdrop Community Support! We do apologize for the delay in shipping your order and are doing everything we can to get this resolved as soon as possible. Your concern is understandable and I have flagged this to our logistics team. They are currently looking into what is going on with the delay and once they have more information, they will update the group via email. Please keep an eye on your inbox for any email updates from our logistics team, but feel free to reach out if you have any questions in the meantime. " Let's hope they manage to resolve it soon! I've been living with this DAC for a few weeks now and I'm really impressed for $300!
First off my system: Quad 57 ESL on proper stands Mark Levisnons ML2 mono blocks Precision Fidelity C7 preamp with RWR step xformer Older Oppo CD player Oracle Delphi 6/Zeta arm/Talisman S MC Proper AC conditioning Proper cables through out Proper setup of everything in dedicated listening room
I'm new to serious digital (as you can see from my "classic" hifi system). But a couple of months ago a buddy introduced me to Tidal and everyting changed. I had to get serious about digital.
Because of MQA, my first DAC purchase was a Meridian Explorer 2, which I thought was pretty good. I took it over to the friend that introduced me to Tidal and we compared it to his expensive Bryston. On Redbook (standard CD), the Bryston was slightly better (my buddy was not impressed because he paid big bucks for his Bryston and I paid about $200 for the Explorer). But on MQA files, having the decoding made for better overall sound than the non-MQA Byston.
A little later, the DAC 80 came up on Drop. I read a little about it and decided to give it a try even though it does not do MQA. It is significantly better than the Explorer and I'm guessing will blow my friends Bryston out of the water as well. I have not had a chance to take it over to him but have warned him it's coming.
I originally thought that I'd the DAC 80 until I decided on a serious ($2000 to $3000) DAC that does MQA but now I'm wondering if 2the 2 to 3 grand is enough to give me a better DAC on non-MQA (which is still the majority - for now).
This is a really good DAC and there is no question that for $300 it is a steal.
