This is an amazing lens, this would probably be in their PRO line if that line existed when this lens came out. The only improvement I'd like to see is weather sealing. As far as sharpness, it's one of the best lenses out there.
spencerberusagreed. weather sealing would indeed be nice to have...this lens is sharp with beautifully blurred backgrounds, about as best as it can get with this sensor size...
Probably the best lens I've ever used. And I've owned a lot across many mounts--Sony, Pentax, Canon.
Why? Because it's not just good in one area--it's excellent in almost all of them.
Wide aperture
Sharp even wide open, incredibly sharp stopped down just a bit
Smooth bokeh
Great build quality with smooth focus ring, metal feel, no rattles
Very little chromatic aberration
Little vignetting
Unnoticable distortion (unsurprising given the focal length, but still)
Compact given the aforementioned specs
Only downsides:
No weather sealing
Not f/1.2 or f/1.4... but either of those would make it much larger and much more expensive
This was absolutely my favorite prime for my micro four thirds sytem, so sharp so fast and smaller than a kit zoom. This is the one lens I wish I could replicate its performance and size on my Nikon system. If you own m4/3 you owe it to yourself to try this lens.
This lens never disappoints for portraits. Razor sharp wide open. Usually use this lens during Christmas and birthday parties. It's a gem. I have used it for years.
I rarely shoot telephoto, but whenever I can use this lens' reach, I reach for this lens. Photos taken with this lens are among the most reliably sharp and contrasty I have. Now when I look at many of my telephoto shots from my travels, I realize how much better they could have been had I taken them with this lens instead of the zooms I had used.
