I am reluctant to even post into this quagmire, because I know doing so will just make me a target, but in the interest of trying to inject some level of fact checking into this argument, please read the article and citations on Wikipedia on GMO foods in Europe: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetically_modified_food_in_Europe
I can honestly say that I do not know what side of this argument I fall on, I am familiar with the talking points on both sides, but the way these personal opinions are being served up, by both sides, with out any links to corroborating facts, journal articles, scientific studies (PRO or CON) makes this entire thread, little more than noise.
I applaud anyone who feels they have found some nugget of truth in life and wants to share it with others, but doing so with barbed comment, and personal slights doesn't help anyone understand or learn from the points you are trying to make.
Share the knowledge you have gained in life but do it in a way that educates, not alienates others. Share the articles and science that have help you form your opinion, so that others may learn. Otherwise an opportunity to learn, will be lost in all the angry rhetoric.
In case I haven't been clear enough, I am not aiming this at either side, but rather, both.
Non-GMO=lower germinating rate=less yield=low ability against disease and pest=less nutrition...
why in the world would I torture myself in a survival situations with those?
You clearly don't know what you are talking about. GMO crops are genetically modified to include pesticides like with BT Corn, or resist herbicides like GMO Soy.
That is a very distinct separation from hybridization, which selectively breeds plants to get specific traits like disease resistance. One is natural, the other is not.
There IS a difference between Hybrid and GMO.
Please read up on the subject more.
I would refer you to the S6E18 episode of MacGyver, "Faith, Hope and Charity," in which our intrepid protagonist thwarts a mobster's home invasion by whacking dude in the face with a mop covered in cayenne pepper. Undeniably, the sweet old ladies' spice rack proved to provide a tactical advantage in what I think we could all agree is a totally common and realistic scenario. #EveryDayCayenne
Would buy if it was 100% GMO Guaranteed. I'd much rather have seeds that grow larger, ward off bugs on both the aboveground portions and roots.
These terrible hipsters and there "i get all my supplements from rainbows and dandelion sun beams"
JollyrifficGood luck finding an agricultural mega-corp that will allow you to gather seed from your GMO crop and re-plant it, rather than buying new seed from them again the following year!
Hi all you GMO fearing souls, please note that even your non GMO foods are not the same plants our ancestors were eating 15000 years ago. For instance, rice was not big and fluffy, and carrots were not orange, and bananas have seeds. Therefore the oh no we are altering genetics is not a valid argument because it is just an accelerated form of whatever we have been doing for the past few hundred centuries. Sure there are some unethical GMO corporations, but it doesn't mean all GMO is bad. Just like how Google collects your search data and sells it to advertisers doesn't mean all search engines are inherently bad.
halfbellstateSorry, that's not entirely true. Artificial selection methods - such as have been used for thousands of years - cannot insert a novel gene (such as from a bacterium) into a plant; you are limited to working with the genetic material that is already present within the species. Modern scientific techniques have massively increased our ability to pursue and accelerate conventional breeding methods, and this is very beneficial. However, the ability to insert entirely new gene sequences into a plant, taken from unrelated species or totally different organisms, is new, and is not merely an accelerated form of conventional breeding.
To anyone making a fussy statement about gmo on this nongmo product, is clearly just prooving a non point. Gmo crops aren't bad for you to eat, it's the glyphasate and 24d they spray on them that kill you from the inside. Non-gmo grains are far more toxic than gmos, do your research.
These seeds are conventionally grown, with fungi, pesti and herbicides, which is what might contribute to them not germinating and having low yields. Monsanto does own the patent on marketmore and beefstake though, but that doesnt mean it has been genetically altered by crisper yet.
russ311Non-gmo grains are far more toxic than GMOs, LOL.
Toxic to what standard? A lot of small levels of stuff considered toxic for you in plant material is actually beneficial for your overall health. Like wolfberries.
Yeah, Monsanto has damage control even in these remote forums.
why restrict to non-GMO? unless you're susceptible to conspiracy theories, for some of these, you could find better GMO seeds with respect to "hardiness and ability to grow in almost any region". Like drought-resistant seeds for instance...
yeah I am saying I'd rather see GMO than heirloom vegetables as they should be better suited to fit the "hardiness and ability to grow in almost any region". You obviously don't understand either English or basic logic. Learn.
