Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. Sculpted-profile The majority of custom keycap sets are sculpted-profile (Cherry, SA, MT3, KAT, etc. - more on profiles generally here) so let’s start there. Because each row has a unique keycap shape, alt layouts require a unique keycap for each legend that moves off its QWERTY row. Oh I also use this as a platform for giving people reviews of items I own that are up for sale.
Wait for the RAMA 36 instead, that one has no dedicated spacebar at all!
I am super pumped for the model f though, can hardly contain myself. I just got my dhl shipment notification for my smart68 today though so I am super pumped to finally put my zealios to use. Bought in on the r4.5 buy expecting to get the smart68 by mid-January and they have been patiently sitting in the box since they came in. Got the 62g if interested, grabbed some black gaterons too because why not... The whole reason I bought a really nice hotswap board was so I could try out a lot of different mx switches before buying more keyboards and soldering in switches as needed. Still not sure if the 62g are the ones I want haha, wish I could have found someone in my area that had the 65g/67g/78g just to get a feel for all of them. I will probably just end up buying them all eventually :)... In the meantime, I am thoroughly loving my jump to topre and the switch from abs to pbt. Did not go too crazy on my keycaps for the smart68, just bought some grey blanks and they feel nice. Not as nice as the pfu caps, but still way better than any of the abs crap I used to accept before I joined the ranks of the keyboard community. Most of you all have been ever so helpful and I am proud to have joined you!
So yeah, I have not purchased anything on this particular website... yet. Yet is the keyword as I do intend to when there is a good deal that comes along. For now I use it as a research resource primarily, and as a way to inform others from my own experiences that may help. For example there was a hot swap board on here that was supposed to support mx switches, but only actually worked for outemu. I was able to post detailing that there was a keyboard that did the same things as the one being sold here, but was slightly different and did accept at least gateron switches from my experience.
Sorry you don't like that I made a comment expressing a brief opinion for something I am not purchasing and have not made any purchases on Massdrop yet. I have put in some requests though, and perhaps one day I will finally find something on here that I am willing to purchase.
