MechEngYes the plates were the problem from the May 24th update. Guess they couldn't fix things fast enough.
" Production of the Massdrop X OLKB Planck Mechanical Keyboard Kit is moving along smoothly. The cases have gone through the CNC process and are now awaiting anodization. The PCB's are complete, and once all of the components arrive, the surface-mounting process will begin. Lastly, the plates ran into some early issues with the laser cutting process, but we appear to have worked out the kinks with that and it looks like they will be done on time as well. As of right now, our expected ship date of late June looks tight but reasonable, and we'll update you once we have more clarity on how the whole process is coming together. Expect to hear back from us around mid June with final estimates. "
tahoeriderI am a mechanical engineer and that sounds pretty unreasonable. It is a piece of sheet metal. Why would you mass produce something that is out of tolerance and does not fit correctly with the switches. All they have to do is cut sheet metal and cut out squares for switches, possibly with notches for switch top removal. Normally you do a test run to see if the machine can hold tolerance than you mass produce, otherwise you are throwing money out the window for parts that wont work. At my company we have a guy that does way more complex sheet metal brackets, etc. You do not use a mill for sheet metal, most likely it will be done with a water-jet, pretty much set it and forget it for many plates from one large piece of sheet metal. Literally one can put a .stp file in the program. If they knew this was happening 3 weeks ago, they should have corrected it then, or did it right in the first place. Sounds like bad planning to me. I do not mind waiting another week, but I feel like I cannot trust that there not to be another bad update.
MechEngDuring the last drop they had a huge mess with the plates having jagged edges which caused some of the switches not to fit. Lots of unhappy people and returns, or people having to file the plate. I decided to return mine due to the plate and a large scratch on the base.
