Hey everyone,
I just got a call from the lab that the steel in this knife tested as the D2 claimed by the manufacturer. When I have the complete analysis to share, I will post it here. We are please to be able to offer this reassurance to the community. Thanks for your patience.

JonasHeinemanHi Jonas, I was glad to receive my order containing both the Drop Point knife as well as the Tanto knives ahead of schedule. I tried contacting Massdrop support regarding one of the knives, but the page where one is to select reason of inquiry is currently not functioning, so I am reaching out here... —————————————————————————————— The “Tanto” knife has a problem with a very strong detente... It is almost impossible to open the knife with one hand using the flipper or thumb studs. Need to use both hands to get it past the detente before it swings open. Once it is past the detente, it opens very freely. And it is very easy to close via the liner lock. Sadly, the Tanto needs to be returned for a refund, or, at least exchanged for another Tanto. Please provide me options. (I should note the “Drop Point” has no issues and is an awesome knife!) Thanks for you help on this. By the way, here’s wishing everyone at Massdrop a very Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy New Year!!!!!! Regards, Alan J. August ——————————————————————————————

Thanks for the test results. I think a hardness test would also be good. Heat treatment seems to be a common problem.

Got mine today and looked it over as usual on all my knives I enjoy unboxing. Did look more Blemish Quality than 1st market sale (frame edges nicked and sharp as well as the G10 edges) and sticky opening.
Took it apart and sanded the edges of the metal frames/G10 handles. Also noticed the bladed hitting the G10 spacer in the middle of it instead of the Pin Stop by the bearings. So quickly drimmeled it about 16th of an inch and fine now. All took about an hour.
All in all, glad I did the sanding (400grit)/applying Tuff Glide to bearing/. Also now opens Smoothly via the Flipper and Locks up nicely! Screws and such are quality. Time will tell on the blade but looks/seems quality. Not a Spyderco/Kershaw quality out of the box, but feel it will last for a while. No buyers remorse!
Photos trying to show hump removed in spacer so blade does not hit and sanded frame now smooth.

ZencowboyI got this knife when it dropped the first time. I like it a lot.
It's on the big side for a folder. It's smaller than the ZT560, but still on the large side for an EDC knife. More like a knife you'd carry around on your belt when you know you'll be doing some cutting.
The first thing I noticed was how smooth the ball bearing pivot was. It's actually the slickest, easiest opening folding knife I own (I have a few dozen knives, and about half of those are folders). After lubing it with some DuPont dry wax and teflon lubricant, I have to say it's the nicest pivoting action I've personally felt in any knife. Even nicer than the ZT560, which has a nice ball bearing pivot system. But this one is noticeably nicer feeling. Super slick and frictionless with a satisfying thock when it locks open.
The blade is also impressive. While I haven't put this knife to much use and can't comment on the durability and edge holding of the blade, I can say that the D2 blade was SCREAMING sharp out of the box. And I mean SCARY, SCARY sharp. Out of the knives I own, this one is undoubtedly the sharpest by a good margin, folding knife or otherwise. Truly impressive sharpness, at least on the one I received.
The feel is of very good quality. No issues with fit or finish, at least on the outside.
One issue I had, however, is also with the blade hitting the spacer when the knife was closed. Except on mine, the blade didn't hit the middle spacer pillar. Rather, it hit the spacer pillar near rear of the handle (If you look at your first picture, it is hitting the bump at the bottom of the black spacer. That bump is the pillar that one of the screws goes through. Since it is located near the back of the handle, the impact point is actually more toward the front of the blade when it is folded together).
I didn't notice this happening for a few days, but then I noticed what looked like a tiny, tiny rumple or crinkle on the edge of my blade. Then I looked closer and figured out was happening. The blade was hitting that G10 pillar and warping slightly at the point of impact.
I didn't disassemble my knife to grind down the pillar like you did. Instead I used a small triangular file to carve out a little notch on that spacer pillar. The notch is deep enough that the blade seats into the groove without touching anything.
So this wasn't perfect. That it happened on more than one knife means that there are some production kinks to hammer out.
But I'm more than happy with this knife. In fact, I like it so much I got the tanto version that Proelia makes when it dropped here a while back.
P.S. - I just pulled out my knife to look at it again. I was wrong. The pillar that the blade was hitting IS that one in the middle. Not the one at the end, as I had thought. So on both my knife and Zencowboy's knife, the blade is hitting at the same spot, the bump in the MIDDLE of the spacer.

When the world has Spyderco, Benchmade, ZT, Emerson, and the likes, why bother with an unknown brand? I'll pass.

choombakWorst attitude I have heard of in a while, just because they are unknown dosnt mean that they aren't as good as or even better than the top brands.

I think the text "G-10 plastic handle" may confuse some. G10 is not plastic. It is layers of fiberglass cloth impregnated with an epoxy resin and cured under heat and pressure. It is a very strong and stable material under many environmental and chemical conditions.

ScottieGG10 is a polymer plastic. What you described is Micarta. Two different animals.

MajorKongG10 uses woven fiberglass and Micarta uses linen or other fabric. G10 is a bit stronger and does not scratch up as easily as Micarta.

Too bad it isn't a deeper carry. I do a lot of hiking cross country and with a knife that isn't deep carry, snagging and pulling the knife out happens. I have lost 2 this way and only go with deep carry now, like Brous Blades etc. The D2 steels is good and holds a fine edge when heat treated correctly. I noticed someone said it rusts easily? Never had this issue at all. I like the satin finish. Have stone, acid wash etc but don't like black as it scars too easily but acid and satin hold up well.

This knife was tested at the the University of Kingston Ontario in their metal ology Department their tests show that there's only 8.5% chromium so is it real D2 steel maybe in China but not in Canada or the USA
Ted1463I just posted our results above confirming that it's D2 according to AISI specs. If you have the test results that confirm the knife tested is the same one sold here, and an analysis of the chemical composition showing otherwise, we'd be glad to take that into consideration. Without any other complete info to work from, the best information that I have is the lab analysis that we had done, which seems to be conclusive that it is, in fact, D2 steel.
PS - I looked up that school, which is called Queen's University of Kingston, and they don't appear to have a "metal ology" department, or a metallurgy department for that matter. http://my.me.queensu.ca/ They do have a Mechanical and Materials Engineering program, but I didn't find info about testing facilities.

I'll probably join this drop eventually, but I wish MD would consider offering the model TX010RB in a future drop. Love the look of that blackwash blade with red/black G10.

Wrong knife MD. How do you send me an option for a drop that doesn't exist?

@BarryO: Hollow ground refers to how the angle from the spine to the blade edge is made, where instead of it being a straight angle or convex line from spine to blade it is concave. Think its something that is common on the old style straight razors that barbers use and is popular in European countries, but no very common on other types of knives. I like it because of its ability to take and maintain a razor edge; but the draw back is that the blade edge, since being thinner than that of a regular blade edge, is more prone to becoming warped and damaged if abused. Makes for an excellent slicing, shaving, and/or skinning blade in a pinch if needed, although I wouldn't use it to pry things open, or cut harder materials, bone, hardwoods, or even softer/thin metals ( ex. aluminum or tin cans...), because of the risk of warping or chipping the blade edge itself, which itself can vary dependant on the depth of the concave itself and thickness, strength, and shape retention of the material used to make the blade itself. And Thanks for the info @Amafan @K.I.N. @BarryO

Anyone have experience with this? Is the D2 stainless? What are the qualities of D2?
eightabove
May 27, 2015
tyler555D2 isn't stainless. It's a very high carbon steel so it holds and edge incredibly well but it's a bit harder to sharpen. I've owned two Proelias and they're great knives.

tyler555I have a Bob Dozier in D2 (it's not SS btw) & it's a b***h to sharpen but once there's an edge it'll last & last
*Bing*
I just showed these knife options to my better half, and she said: "I like the the curve blade and the swerved handle on the other. "
Combine the options, if that can happen, at this price, I might buy another one.
JAS - Just a Suggestion. :D
