Named for its wide, scooped blade, the QSP Pelican may not be able to fly, but it can certainly elevate your everyday carry. The blade is made from S35VN, arguably the best commercial steel on the market Read More
I have a full collection of blades at this point and out of all of them I can't claim to like any of them more than this one. It is BY FAR my favorite. The edge is extremely sharp and easy to sharpen. The finish on the sides makes it easy to clean. And the opening movement extremely smooth. 10/10
I like QSP's micarta. Very comfortable in hand and the closing action is silky smooth. The only real issue I have is that the blade is too tall. Makes it bigger in the pocket than it needs to be.
Been my EDC for over six months. Could not be more pleased with the performance of this blade. Rare has been the day when it has not been used, from galley duty to work use this knife has been up to the task. Construction is absolutely without fault!
Hard to beleave this knife can be had for under a$ 100!!! 08/25/20 It is now several days after posting my QSP PELICAN review. I should have read the previous reviews before writing it. To those who found legitimate fault with their purchase, I offer my sincere condolences. From what I can gather, most were due to lack of QC. IMO, there is no excuse for for this. Most of the reviewers were very pleased with their purchase and would recommend the PELICAN to a friend. I, for one, have had a few issues with "Hands-Off On-line Purchases." I just think such an experience is inevitable to anyone making a number of on-line transactions. The Law of Averages will get us every time!! It is the Naure of the Beast! To those who commented on the knife's weight (4.5 oz) as being too heavy for EDC, l sympathize. I have a drawer filled with knives which have been relegated to "paper weights!" After making a number of knife purchases on line which I found not conducive to comfortable EDC, I put the limit of 5oz on any EDC knife purchase. Because of this, there have been a number of Love @ First sight offerings, I have passed on. Weight is the first thing I check, when a blade interests me. I am fairly certain, there are a number of people who are not concerned by this issue at all, but for those of us, who are, it behooves us to set a reasonable weight limit to our Every Day Carry!
Substantial hard use knife w poor QC and out of the box flaws
Just received the Pelican yesterday 3/27. Initial impressions:
-Fairly substantial knife at 4.5 oz with good ergonomics. Fits nicely in my large hands. Nicely milled and finished micarta.scales. Deep carry pocket clip that allows about 1/2 inch to protrude from pocket. No hot spots for me. Gorgeous bowhead wharncliff blade shape. Thick blade stock with a fairly thin edge and even grind. Perfectly centered and extremely sharp.
An excellent slicer. Jumping on blade is excellent and extends 1.25 inches. along the spine. The jumping and flipper tab are not to sharp. However…
-Stiffest detent I have ever experienced. Tore a piece of my right index finder off the first time I tried to flip it. It was even difficult to open with 2 hands. I tried backing off the pivot screw a bit but it didn’t help and caused some blade rock. There was also a distinct grinding when swinging the blade open and closed.
So rather than send it back I decided to disassemble it and see what tweaks could be made. It was surprisingly difficult to break down. I was unable to remove 2 of the screws on the clip side and one on the show side. They spun freely when loosened but they could not be backed out so I could not remove the scales/liners. I had to carefully pry the front of the knife apart with a hard plastic butter knife handle. This allowed enough separation between the two sides for me to remove the pivot, blade, and bearings w/o damaging the knife.
Cleaned the bearings and all contact surfaces with alcohol and filed off a few rough edges on the blade tang. Reassembly was much easier altho the 3 screws could not be fully tightened so I assume the threads might be stripped. A drop of blue Loctite should keep them in place. After adjusting the pivot and adding a little oil, the detent was easier to overcome but not ideal and the grinding was eliminated. The blade drops shut easily now. I spent time mindlessly opening and closing the blade several hundred times and it’s getting better and better. I expect further improvement over time.
So looks like the QC was subpar but It’s in my pocket now and quite pleased w being able to get it dialed in to a large degree.
Happy with the knife overall, the handles are a nice material and I do like the blade shape.
My knife didn't have a very flat blade (the "flats") in particle.
The presentation, fit and finish are great, smooth and comfortable in the hand. I’m sure it will make a good EDC blade. A nice addition to my collection.
This is an excellent knife for the money. The action is amazingly good, and the micarta feels great in the hand. The blade shape and size are very useful. Would definitely recommend.
