Tack one of these ReyLight keyfobs on your knife, pack, keychain, or around your neck and you won’t lose it. Designed to hold vials of tritium—a self-powered isotope of hydrogen that glows in the dark—they brighten up your carry and add a hint of flair Read More
Am I the only one who asks himself how safe is this to carry? I mean, it is toxic that tritium, how is it protected inside the keyfob if there are holes?
PafkataAn hour, outdoors in direct sunshine, will expose you to more gamma and ionizing radiation than a lifetime of exposure to an amount of tritium many times this size. Even if you swallow the stuff. Or break the glass vial and poke the jagged end of the open vial deep into your eyeball and roll the tritium down in there. But back to the sun. If you should ever find yourself at an elevation of say, 5,000 feet above sea level, like in Denver, Colorado...or Mexico City, Mexico...where the ozone layer is thinner...and God forbid, by the time you get to 10,000 feet, in say, Leadville, Colorado...well...honestly, if you get a serious sunburn, twenty years to the day the dermatologist will be cutting chunks out of your hide. And those are the mildest, non-lethal cases.
Ever think about the several thousands of good, hard-working folks that die of slip and falls stepping into and out of the bathtub each year? Or millions that die within 5 miles of home, driving? And you did hear that there's a resurgence of Measles cases, more from typhus in Los Angeles, Australia even struggled to contain congenital syphilis for a bit.
There are literally thousands upon thousands of horrible ways to die.
So really, take your chances with a little glowy tube of tritium and feel good about it.
crossYikes, that was intense! Described like this, I'd now like to order a glass of tritium smoothie with a lemon slice xD Thanks for the clarification guys!
Got mine in the mail today, looks pretty nice and I like the packaging. One question for anyone who knows: what's the opaque plastic plug stuck in the hole? Is that something I should use to plug the tritium vials (on their way soon hopefully from mixglow)?
RMunroYou never will see the vials themselves for sale here or other major sites:
https://www.tecaccessories.com/pages/primer-on-tritiumTo summarize, you can't sell tritium outside of existing products (watch, compass, gun sights, etc; https://www.nrc.gov/materials/miau/consumer-pdts.html) without a class 7 license. Bare tritium vials of this nature (or inside keyfobs) don't fall under any such exemptions. This is why you will only see select sites selling the vials themelves, or products similar to this containing these vials, such as tritiumkeychains.com or mixglo.com
The only competitively priced options I see on that site are stainless steel. The only one with a price you are thinking is considerably smaller and also not titanium. Asking for a link was more of a rhetorical question, because I've already looked and the only competitive offerings are roughly the same cost and still 4-6 weeks delivery in my experience (ebayers in China).
So once again, please link something directly that is titanium and holds a 22.5mm vial, because even this current offering seems to beat most everything on that site directly. This item plus a vial is still less than the average $40 on that site. Site I use for trit vials is mixglo, and here is a link to the vial that fits this: https://www.mixglo.com/store/p8/T3_3x22.5mm_Vials.html
CyphreThanks for saving me the trouble of typing all that. 😁
I'm definitely getting one of these, but I do wish it was more round (and a hair lighter on account of shaving the corners).
