On a recent visit to New York, we found Ron Rider—founder of the legendary Rider Boot Co.—reminiscing about a handmade pair of hiking boots he’d produced some years back. Ottawas, he called them Read More
Hi All - I have time to add one post here, before jumping on a plane to Italy to work. Unfortunately will not be able to participate during this run. For sizing, I converted the sizes and marked the stock to coincide with my Dundalk boot fittings. The boots are NOT marked correctly, as this factory didn't understand my translations. I have redone the fittings, and they will go out correctly, but I can't change the sole stamps. Again, fittings here = Dundalk fittings, if you can connect the dots from previous massdrop offerings. Or on our site (Dundalk is on 42 last). As Hikers, they will fit shorter in the toes and slightly wider than a dress last/fitting (length the same but toes will end up being closer to the toe box since this last is rounder...as is correct for a functional Hiker). The linings are 100% lambswool - including the footbed - and the uppers are a good full grain calf (although I don't know the exact weight...probably around 1.8mm). Hope that helps, and thanks for looking in!
Got mine (see above for pics). Initially I sort of panicked because the sticker on the bottom (that peels off easily) said size 11. I ordered size ten. But I tried them on and they fit like 10s. So, regardless the fit was great, however complicated it all was to get there it worked out in the end.
Build quality seems excellent. All the stitching is near perfect. Leather quality seems excellent. Of course the test of time will be the ultimate arbiter, but these certainly seem like a pair of boots that with proper care will age very well. I hadn't realized they were wool "puff" lined. Very comfortable on the inside. Sole is a bit stiff, right now, but I imagine that as the rubber breaks in they will work out well.
So far I'm very happy. It's a shame that I'm getting them right as the weather turns warm, but they're a pair I plan on having for years, so no worries.
Any plans on making a run of these boots without the wool liner? These look like awesome year-round boots, but the wool liner may be a bit too much for the Texas heat.
CozShesDeadYou would be a 10.5D in these as well.
As Ron and I have said before, these generally run true to size - go with your US Brannock size. I'm not sure where the confusion is coming from. If I'm missing something, let me know.
I'm sorry to post yet another sizing question, but I'm still confused after reading through all the comments. I'm a UK 10, which normally means I'm a US 11; but 11 is unavailable. Do you reckon 10.5 would fit?
Build quality seems a little shoddy on these boots for the price. My right boot has a wool (?) padded sole while the other is bare. Dissapointing QC for the price point. Also as an FYI to those who may be wondering if these are hiking boots in future drops - they are certainly not. These are styled as "hikers" but they would definitely not be appropriate for anything other than a light hike. More of a fashion boot than a practical one.
