10 images of the front of the jacket. Not one of the back.
I cannot speak for the quality of this product but I bought a duffel on a previous drop and the handles fell off on the first use. The rivets were not seated. I then find out that there is only a 30 day warranty. if you have a need for a disposable product....Go for it.
the sizing chart is bonkers. I have a size 46 chest. Generally wear large or extra large depending on cut. European stuff is the devil because, well I guess us Americans are larger. But according to this size chart I wear an extra small. Since half my chest would be 23. I would buy this right now, except I have no idea what size is what.
Looks more like a costume than a parka. Liked the camo shorts better. Disappointed I bought it
Your model is the invisible man. ūüėÉ
We're bringing back this ever-popular M-51 parka from Rothco, and adding of the most requested colorways: the woodland camo. The M-51 from Rothco is a great and affordable style that be customized quite a bit in the way you wear it or accessorize it. From putting your own patches, pins, and buttons, to how you size it (worn oversized for more drapy look that can be mixed with sporty sneakers, or sized down fitted with raw denim and boots) -- we think it's a really versatile piece at a killer price.

camo is a 'colorway'? hilarious
I got my M-51 Fishtail Parka today (Black Medium)
The white Shell Liner label states: Parka Extreme Cold Weather Chest 37"-41" chest size. (I'm a 43" chest)
It also specifically states, this Parka is designed to go over the M-65 Field Jacket, which I also own in a Medium size. It is more looser than the M-65 jacket, as expected.
I have been a member of Massdrop for a very long time. You would think on an offering like this, they would have a Parrot model as well as a human as well as Parrot sizing. Speaking of sizing, who has half a chest, Anyway, since it is cheaply made, why should I bother. Always cheap stuff for our military.

What? What are you talking about?!? Are you upset that this jacket that is made for a human doesn't come in bird sizes? If so that seems a bit...... off......
Epic_Enkidu
Well, MD could consider the feathered folks that may be here.
Received it and yes well put together and sewn but very thin (cheap?) fabrics used, was not worth it IMO
Does this parka repel water? I also wanna know.
m0arpheus
My experience with a similar war surplus version is that they attract water. 100% cotton doesn't seem to imply this model is different.
m0arpheus
you are lucky if it repels wind, much less moisture. Knock off of Old Navy

From my understanding it soaks up as much water as possible. Bird feathers are far better.
Waxed cotton canvas is extremely waterproof. This drop is really vague though
Never been disappointed with a Rothco made product. This is a very good price too!!!
There are button holes in the hood. What are they for?
musashiaharon
You can add a fur hood. It buttons into the original hood. An example can be seen here:
https://store.glennsarmysurplus.com/fish-tail-parka-m51-hood-p901.aspx
No affiliation with link. Just an example. I would recommend getting an original wool liner. Prob more than this coat if you can find one but definitely worth it. This is one of the few pieces of gear I "lost" in the Army so I could keep it when I got out. I also kept my wool 5 button sweater.

To attach a hood.
One of my buttons broke when I unbutton to try it on, is there anything that can be done to get it fixed?

got my Rothco Fishtail Parka today, and not a moment too soon, it's been cold here in north central Fla. Parka fits great, the quality overall exceeded my expectations. Great drop, highly recommended! Wanted to say, the front pockets I read others complained was too small;...I don't think so. Not my experience anyway

The one and only shot of the back makes it look like it has a straight hem, rather than a fishtail. Hope it's straight, but if so, the title should be changed.

Oh no! That definitely shouldn't be happening --- Please contact our Customer Service and we'll help you get it sorted out. Sorry for the inconvenience!
Rothco quality.
After reading the comments about MD's latest POS product, I'm literally amazed that they can stay in business. I've finally figured out their scam. They target novices who think they are getting good deals on 'cool' stuff. The fact that it takes a month or more to ship is reason enough to hate on this site. I just don't get it
TayTayBalls
there are some good deals though
TayTayBalls
I have yet to see one and I've been lookomg for over a year. Inflated MSRP's and low quality items. Don't even know why I bother anymore.
Can the liner be worn separately?
Lakilaki
If the liner is a replica of the original then yeah, you could wear it separately but there are no buttons, collar, pockets, etc..... You will look like you are wearing a liner.
Is it made of Ventile or a similar naturally waterproof form of cotton, I wouldn't much fancy a parka that relied only on DWR coatings to keep you dry in winter.
Load 9 more comments
No furs and skins that still have their oils are waterproof or more water resistant to be technical. More modern ones are made of polyesters that are more water resistant, and most modern commercially produced parkas are heavily DWR'd, and the real parkas made for serious work are all made out of Ventile a waterproof form of cotton or seriously heavy cloth that is very water resistant(such as native spun wools). It's pretty much only these cheap 60s US Army crap things that don't have any water resistance whatsoever. They've always had a degree of resistance to water, the cheap standard cotton ones are literally sponges and they aren't remotely consistent with the traditional design at all that wouldn't have access to cotton and even if they did it's far from what anyone would consider a suitable warm cloth.
But the point remains these things are about as useful as a chocolate fireguard in winter, they aren't at all waterproof, and they aren't even that warm. In fact if you are going to nitpick about parkas this isn't really a parka given it's not made of the right materials and no parka would have used the design like that.

Obviously we don't agree...
sizing help? anybody have any experience with whether or not this fits bigger or smaller than usual?
andrewin94
Bigger than usual -- please check out the sizing chart on the main page for this drop. Thanks for your interest!
Just a quick word of warning, as an individual very familiar with military clothing, Rothco is a manufacturer of knock off military gear. Some of their stuff is ok, some is crap. I'm honestly kinda of shocked Massdrop would work with such a producer of dubious quality.
pjgarner
Yeah, considering Massdrop users are the types that discern different brands and do a lot of research on products, this is very surprising to me as well.
Even Alpha Industries would have been a better pick than Rothco, or a limited supply of real surplus M-51 parkas.
Kreation
Dude alpha vs rothco is like apples to oranges. Alpha was a producer of issued equipment for a long time, they've moved more commercial as of late though. A great choice for a drop would be with Propper, Polartec or even Tru-Spec; actual producers of issued equipment that also sell commercially.
I own a current version of their field jacket with button in liner and its a great coat. Warm, water resistant and lots of huge pockets with a collared hood. Yes, made in China but well put together and sewn. This looks like a solid drop.

With the liner is actually quite warm! I had to deattach mine because it was getting pretty warm pretty fast. I guess it depends how cold it gets on your side of things.
No, but a sweater or light fleece would make it extra warm and good to go in cold weather.
