The leather is great quality, and my concerns about the "ocean" color not being blue enough were gently put to rest. Now that I've been using it for a few weeks, I have other issues. Some are design problems, others are craftsmanship problems.
On the design, the first issue I have is that the pen holder is outside of the folio. It really should be in the center of the fold. I carry fountain pens for work and I don't like them so exposed. It doesn't look neat and tidy, and leaving a $200-500 pen out is asking for trouble.
Second, the document flap is kind of useless. It needs to be a pocket (3/4 width would be fine) so that documents can't fall out when the folio is closed, but you can still quickly skim through them. I've picked it up wrong and had everything fall straight out. There shouldn't be a "wrong way" to pick it up. Other companies do this with a zipper enclosure, but I like the single snap better- when it works.
My last design gripes are also functionality items. There needs to be an actual pocket with a clear face for business cards, preferably with a thumb notch for grabbing them quickly, and finally, a flap or pocket for a cell phone. The die cuts on the main document flap don't work well enough.
On to craftsmanship. I'm not a fan of the single stitch. Doesn't feel sturdy enough, and should be double stitched if using a machine, or saddle stitched by hand. The other problem is the lack of skiving. The leather is three layers thick in one area and it's already creating a bulging outline on the exterior of the folio. Skiving it down at the stacking points would prevent the exterior distortion and lighten the folio up a little.
I rely on folios for getting important paperwork to and from client and executive meetings. This one looked like a great buy, but doesn't have enough functionality or artisan feel to warrant buying it over something from (sigh) Staples or Office Depot. I'll keep using mine while I look for something better, but I wouldn't buy it again. Wait for V2, which hopefully addresses some of these issues.
