Holy cow this is a great price! To bad I don't need a 480. I would have picked this up in a heartbeat if I didn't have a 980ti.

EndMeNo, you would be losing some performance.

EndMeI wouldn't buy a new card so soon. The next gen cards are around the corner, and the 970 still performs great.

ADC_BotIncorrect. The RX 480 is roughly half way between the GTX 970 and GTX 980 in overall performance.

EndMeI switched from an EVGA GTX 970 SSC to the MSI Gaming X RX 480. The 480 is slightly faster than the 970, but not enough to notice outside of benchmarks. Where the RX 480 wins is in FreeSync support.
You could buy a FreeSync monitor and an RX 480 for about the same price as just buying an equivalent G-Sync monitor. So, if you have or plan to get a FreeSync monitor, switching from the 970 to the 480 is worth it. That's what I did. But if you don't have or plan to get a FreeSync display, keep the 970 or upgrade to something better.

MedionHi, I'm not that knowledgeable, was wondering how this compares to the 1070. I just bought one a month ago but since I didn't know much now I'm faced with what you mention. The Gsync monitors are more expensive than an equivalent one with Freesync with the same specs, say 2k, 144Hz and 27" Which is what si Linda wanted. So I was wondering how they compare, would I be better off waiting a bit to save $ and just keep my 1070 cuz it's better and buy a Gsync monitor when one goes on sale and I've saved money. Or is this RX 480 worth selling my 1070 and buying a cheaper freesync monitor ?

MethensThe 1070 is pretty big upgrade from the RX 480. I would just keep it and get a decent monitor. G-sync is cool and all but I really don't think it's worth downgrading your GPU a free sync monitor.

MethensAMD doesn't have a full lineup right now. The RX 480 compares well with the GTX 1060, which is quite a bit below the GTX 1070 in performance.
I switched from a GTX 970 to an RX 480 as my monitor had FreeSync (and I was able to make the switch at VERY low cost by selling my 970). But if I had to choose between a 1070 and no VRR (G-Sync/FreeSync), and an RX 480 with FreeSync, I'd take the 1070.
A good G-Sync monitor that is often budget friendly would be the Dell S2716DG (or DGR at Best Buy, they added an extra letter so that they could claim it's different and therefore not have to pricematch). It's often on sale for $450. I'm a TN-hater but these new generation 8-bit TN panels are pretty nice. I'd have no issues using one.
If you do get the Dell, dial back the overdrive setting. The stock "1ms" setting causes a ton of inverse ghosting.

EndMeNo the 480 is only slightly more powerful than the 970 so not really worth an upgrade
