OMG! Somebody found an MD watch cheaper on another site? It's the end of the world--Ahhh!!! Run for your life!!! Yes, it's true, MD is rarely the cheapest, and probably never the fastest shipping, but we do get a fair amount of variety around here, and sometimes they do have what turns out to be a pretty good price on this or that drop. Generally, that's going to apply to outlier items, and not mainstream merchandise that everyone and their brother is selling at the same time on a zillion common sites. There is certainly no reason to think that Seiko is going to sell MD a few dozen Samurais for less money than it would sell a few thousand to Amazon--right? So, the moral of the story is: check this space every morning to see what the Watch Fairy has slipped under MD's pillow during the night and see what, if anything, appeals. If you find a pearl among the amongst the swines, do a little comparison shopping and finally, make an informed purchase decision. Now, as to all the folk who found significantly better prices on oddball sites like Sears and Walmart, one should be aware that those are often affiliate sites connected to other sites, which are often eBay sellers. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not--you get to decide what if any, trade offs are involved. And finally, especially when it comes to Seiko, I've found occasional savings on sites like Kohl's where they often run additional percent-off or coupon discounts that can be stacked on top of their sale prices--which, as it turns out, is how I got a pretty good deal on my Samurai ;- )

So, good luck and good shopping to all!

RayFGood point about walmart.com, in particular. They are trying to compete with Amazon, so they are doing what Amazon does, allowing/encouraging third party vendors to sell on their site. If there is a conflict, walmart.com will try to mediate, but they have little control over these vendors. I had several bad experiences with walmart.com third sellers selling PPF early on in April, and the same problem on Amazon, where 3rd party vendors were taking orders and ghosting. Walmart helped in some cases, but I had to notify my credit card on other sellers.

I don't find black DLC or black finishes suit Citizen and Seiko diver watches, honestly (maybe except the "Tuna"). Stainless steel or titanium grey give these dive watches such a nicer finish. This "blacked out" Seiko ends up looking like an Invicta instead... And that's not good.

BobrazI have have a Ninja Solar now for nearly 2 years , it gets a lot of wrist time and the black coating is still as good as the day I got her , it seems very solid . Mine came on the silicone black rubber strap and its very soft and wears nice , I currently have it on a Strapcode ' Hexhead ' PVD black coated and these 2 go well together . So I would not worry about the longevity of the coatings , mine is holding up just fine . Here it is alongside my Astron and PADI Turtle , which is on a Strapcode Oyster .

beanerds2I have to admit, that 'Ninja' is a really really nice watch. I guess it's the exception that proves my rule (it's just my opinion, right, not a universal truth 😏). I still think, however, that I'd find it more attractive in stainless steel 🤔... And a strap!

Curious: why do these come with “2 year aftermarket warranty” and not factory warranty?

otaking241Grey market buys it’s not retail and it’s not black market. A retailer has to buy so many watches to retain its official dealer license so at times it sells new watches to a grey dealer to keep its numbers up

I really like this one but at this price-point I would love to have a black strap option. Will anyway most properly get it. This looks fantastic and I saw and held a normal Samurai the other day and really liked it. PS: How easy is it to change the strap yourself? Where has this one been assembled? Would not be the Japanese version by chance?

BedroomYou can purchase the black seiko strap separately. I did so for my samurai that only came on a stainless bracelet.

BedroomI have the Samurai and it has drilled lugs, so taking the strap off and putting another one on is a breeze. It's a great watch. I really like mine a lot.

All "black" Seikos are "ion-plated," hence the glossy finish that photographs differently. They are not PVD or DLC. The dials have been around for a while, With the color grading darker as you go from the top to the bottom of the dial to simulate the water as it gets deeper. "Save the Ocean" dials are also available i SS. On another note, I have three turtles; black, blue, and gray, as well as three Samurais; black, blue, and orange. I have no issues with the quality of fit, finish, or the bracelet on any of them. I do find the Turtles hug my wide , flat wrist better than the Sammies, and the new generation of Samurais, as nice as they are, still make me wish that I had kept one of the 3 or 4 blue titanium ones that passed through my hands back when they came out.

MrBoots As much as I liked the idea of owning a Samurai, in practice it's probably on of my least worn watches. Given the choice between it and the Turtle lying next to it, the Turtle always seems to win out. Hard to say why, but I've always been annoyed with the guy at Seiko who decided not to add the Day complication! If I ever catch up with him, I'm definitely going to give him a piece of my mind!

I have the stainless steel version of the turtle watch. It is an absolutely fantastic watch a wear it everyday at work and wear it when I dress up. I purchased mine when the local downtown Seattle Macy's one out of business and I believe I paid roughly about the same price.

I think you may be right on the warranty part, I've never had to service anything from there under warranty but I can see that being possible for sure given their business model. One thing I know for sure is that you may get an imperfect piece and there is a restocking fee for anything over 3K or 4K - I definitely wouldn't buy anything in that price range from there. Easier dealing with ADs and local watch dealers

MrtzaDefinitely. I once returned a watch that had a misaligned day/date, so those kind of imperfections get in my nerves a bit. 😉

I’ve come around to that colour combo from a fashion standpoint, but the gunmetal + blue scheme Seiko has trotted out in recent years is a bit of a mistake I’m afraid. (The Turtle in this config is especially abominable.)

johnnylarueAgreed. Other than good old stainless steel and a few bronze examples, I haven't found any other case/metal colors tempting enough to actually buy--yet.
