you guys are missing the POINT....water...RESISTANT...not water {PROOF.) instead of arguing it on mass drop...go visit a SEIKO/ CITIZEN...etc..DEALER..and ask them what water RESISTANT to 100 meters MEANS..i think you will be surprised what they tell you
Actually any rope that is rated for 500lb actually will have been tested to atleast twice that more than likely for rigging ropes a 5X safety factor is standard.
Now talking watches. When engineering your water resistance I would imagine that you would put atleast a factor of safety (f.o.s./s.f. is how many time greater your product requirements your product is actually engineered to survive) would probably be at least 2 meaning a 100m watch would actually be designed to survive 200m.
Now look at production if you give something a 100m rating you know that in manufactuing you are going to get a normal distribution of results. So depending on what you standards are if I wanted 99.9% of my products to excede my rating I would have to have close to 4 standard deviations from my average to achieve this. Now if I have really bad quality control i.e. 10 m std dev that would meen that my average actual water resistance would have to be 140m 99.937% of watches beign able to survive between 100 and 180m, but actually you would have a success rate of 99.99685% because any watch with a greater ability than 100m would pass quality control. If you tighten your control to say 2m std you would have 99.99685% of all watches would achieve your 100m rating, just costs time and money to tune production.
When I worked as a quality engineer we actually had 6 sigma on each side, which equates to 0.999999998% of all product will meet your requirement.
TLDR: Designs have a safety factor normaly at least 2. Then in production normally 99% of your product has to meet or excede the requirement which equations to 4+std dev above the requirement.
So your 100m watch probably can go to 150m easy.
OneLoveThanks. I just noticed you responded to another member re this question. My apologies for not seeing it. This is my first watch, so that's why my question. Cheers and Smooth Sailing ⛵️🌝⛵️
Lot of whiners complaining about the price on this watch!
Obviously, if you can find a better price, there's no reason to over-pay, but don't let ten or twenty bucks one way or the other stop you from actually buying and enjoying a watch you like! In the long run, where you buy it, and the price you pay are secondary issues. What really matters is, did you end up with a watch that puts a smile on your face each time you strap it on?
If the price you paid for any watch takes that smile off of you face, you didn't pay too much--you just bought the wrong watch!
So this is more expensive than say, the baby ice monster, which has solid end links and a better movement.
Buy this one for the looks, not the specs. I’d also budget for a sapphire crystal swap - the only hardlex crystal I have with scratches is my flightmaster which also has a domed hardlex as well.
WatchyoutalkingaboutWell I've heard one should never drink alone, so in the spirit of togetherness, I'm going put on two Monsters and drink two bottles of Bourbon...

Then I'm going to run down to Costco (they're having a sale) and replace my flaming heap of melted Rolex parts with something a little more befitting of my station in life:
sprk1Thx for the link to Brady Straps. I've got a different Seiko automatic with a woven band that has become weathered and stinky very quickly. I think the Brady band will be much better for it.
Indeed. $130 from 3 vendors with free Prime shipping on Amazon. They should stop calling these "drops" unless the price is actually at least 15% lower than retail price elsewhere. $5 off here is 4% off, pretty pathetic.

King8888I am not against them making money, they should just come up with a different name for it. The only "drop" part that is left of it is "the sale is final". No returns part and having to wait for a month for this would hardly worth $5 to many. Discounts are not even close to what they were not so long ago. Plus no mention of the manufacturer warranty, so even that is uncertain.
Do we have any idea on the freight company Massdrop uses for this watch? DHL for me up in Toronto, Canada will ding me for an additional duty of approx $35.
At that price I can do better?
This model is not made in Japan as you can see nowhere on the dial says Made in Japan. You can buy a real Japanese made Seiko SNZH53 on eBay as low as $150 with blue dial and blue bezel and free shipping. Many Seiko watches were made in Malaysia with real Seiko movement and sold for a lower price. However if you want a real Japanese made watch beware and look for the Made In Japan printing on the dial.
ac3698Actually at Checkout they give you the option to buy the Japanese (J1) or the International (K1) Version. And the J1 Has "japan" on the dial, just like your picture.
