The open back 500 series Sennheisers are a great place to start if you've never had high quality headphones before. They give you a good sense of what legit high quality sound is like, without breaking The bank. Just be warned that they can be a gateway drug to spending hundreds of dollars more than you ever imagined on headphones. My name is Guns, and it's been one month since I bought my last headphones.

Zarok:) They should have an MD Proxies section where you can work with people from the US to order things and then ship to EU maybe...
OR, JUST NOT SHOW RELEASES THAT AREN'T US ONLY TO EU AND REST OF WORLD USERS.

Shipping limited to US and Canada only, wtf? Why send out your emails to the whole world then MD? Honestly I could do a better mailshot using my 6 year old Nexus 7. Can you please learn some common sense, and actually tailor the mailshot to certain regions. There's honestly no point telling me about these headphones if you won't even deliver them to me.

I have owned both these and the 558s. I'll do a quick compare for those who are wondering.
Clarity = 579s but not by a lot. Bass = 579s but not by a lot. Looks = depends on if you like black or silver. Soundstage = 558s by a bit. Comfort = 558s thanks to the extra foam on the top, but it's not a HUGE difference. The ear cushions are exactly the same. Overall sound = the 558s are slightly flatter and warmer. The 579s are slightly more exciting. We're not talking a big difference, they're both still 5xx Sennheisers at their core. The 558s struggle with faster music while the 579s sound like they do a little better with it. That's just to my ears. Weight = virtually identical (the 700 grams weight listed is wrong btw, it's well under 300 grams). Impedance = Close enough to tell people it's the same. Headphone connection = identical. The same 2.5mm locking cables work with both headphones. Ear cups = literally identical. In fact, you can buy 558 replacement cups and they fit on the 579s without any modification required. Gives it a fun black and silver two tone look. Foam mod = doable on both headphones, I can personally confirm. The foam isn't the same though. The 579s have thicker, harder foam. Likely why the bass is a little heavier. Removing the foam has the same effect on both. A slight reduction in bass, harshness, and clarity in exchange for a bit more Soundstage and a sweeter sound. Again, this isn't a huge difference, just a small one.
Durability = 579s. The outside grill is metal instead of plastic and there's no cheap foam cover on the outside. The headband pad is covered in leather which helps reduce hair oil from screwing it up.
Repair and mod = 558s . You can get into the 579s as easily as you can get into the 558s. However, the 558s have a replaceable headband pad. That's literally the only difference.
They are fairly close. Close enough that I returned mine to Amazon and kept my 558s because it wasn't worth $179 for the minor upgrade.
At $99 bucks though? Compelling for sure and I'm gonna think about it. Especially since my 558s are 4 years old and already on their their second set of pads.

Me too I think, but still as a heads up to anyone looking . Really, I own both and will most likely still join this drop and gift them or start using my old one as travel/on campus can.

zaphrodboxWhat I find interesting is that this is just a standard item. No special Massdrop editions or anything like the k7xx or the HD6xx. I skipped the 6xx because the 650s were too warm for me and I hate carrying an amp around while listening on a phone, but these with a 6 ft cable and in midnight blue? I'd have joined yesterday lol.
Hell I'm still on the fence about the k7xx. My phone and sound card (Asus DGX) can only just barely drive them but they sound so good.

so i got in on this drop as my first introduction to the Sennheiser sound house, I'm wondering how these stack up against the 600 series headphones that i hear so much about and am wondering if im going to be left wanting instead of just going with a 600 series from the start?
the price here was really good....my goal is to get a decent set of headphones from most of the major soundhouses out there and decide who i personally like the best then go all in and invest in some of their top tier stuff....
would you say these headphones are an accurate representation of what i can expect from Sennheiser in general? i understand each model and even from set to set can have their own sound, but i am wondering if generally speaking this is a good place to start with Sennheiser or should i have just gone straight to the 600 series for that?

I think you're talking about wanting a DAC/amp stack as a separate thing, not tied to these headphones, so on that front let me endorse the Modi/Magni stack. You'll officially be a snob when it's not enough :). I would also second the comment that you must have gotten a faulty e10.
On the other hand, you don't need an amp to drive these 579s. They're like 50ohm, 105db sensitivity. Really easy to drive. Unless you have a lousy source, where you get more benefit from the DAC side of the equation (entry kindle fire is the only one I can personally attest to), you're better off spending that money on your exploration of different headphone sounds.
To each his own, of course, but every time I get the itch to start messing around with more DACs & amps, I read this post from NwAvGuy (the dude that designed the O2 Amp):
http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011/02/gain-and-headphone-ampsdacs.html
Keeps me focused on buying headphones with minimal differences instead ;)

TLDR: Massdrop has been selling UNAUTHORIZED/POTENTIALLY FAKE Chord products. https://www.facebook.com/chordelectronics/posts/1161256660641020 WTF Massdrop???? And someone who joined the drop has confirmed the issue here https://www.massdrop.com/buy/chord-mojo-portable-dac-amp/talk/1817061 My comment may not be relevant to these MD made products, but it is related to audiophile stuff anyway. So you better have a proper answer to this, otherwise you will lose me and many other potential customers. UPDATE: MD has answered to the issue here https://www.massdrop.com/buy/chord-mojo-portable-dac-amp/talk/1821097 TBH I'm really happy that I can put my trust in MD again. Hope that this will be a lesson for MD and for us as well.

I wonder how does it compare to HD 598. I am new to audiophile, and only have HD 598 for a couple of months and I loved it. Just wondering how different is the HD5x9 vs HD5x8

HoboLoboToo bad you missed out on the Beyerdynamic 880/990headphones that dropped recently they have a very different Sound signature and well worth it. Also look at AKG they are a top seller.

I honestly don't understand you people, why send this to the whole god damn world, get them hyped, only to find out at the end that it's limited to US and CA . Doesn't make any sense...

This is what you need to know from the review:
"The Sennheiser HD 579 offers as much detail as the more-expensive HD 599, but with a flatter sound and a cleaner midrange. Despite the relaxed high end and sometimes-lackluster soundstage, I’d still say it’s the most impressive 5 Series headphone for critical listening.
Recommendations
If you prefer low lows and high highs, or if you’re a rock or hip hop aficionado, you may want to skip the HD 579 in favor of the more dynamic HD 599.
However, if you’re in the market for more of an analytical sound, the HD 579 is probably your best bet – or should at least be on your list of headphones to try. For classical and jazz music, this may be the better option, though a close second and third might be the Grado SR225 or the AKG K612, respectively."

How much better are these, if at all, from the HD 558?

You could be right, but they are still minor differences between them. I own the HD598, HD600 and HD 6xx. I can say that there is a big sound difference between the 500 series and 600 series, but there is a smaller and minor difference between these two 600 series cans. I still prefer the 6xx because of the extra weight in the bass/sub bass, but it’s not night and day and I may confuse them sometimes. I tried once the HD558 and I prefer the mids of HD598,but the difference was still a minor one.

tessierpgYep, that's exactly right. I'd liken the difference within the 500 series Senns to the difference between say, the XL and XLT version of the same Honda. Different, but if you were buying yourself two cars you probably wouldn't buy both. The 500s to 600s is more like moving from Honda to Acura - same company, different class altogether. That was my experience in buying the 579s then ultimately returning them because, while I really liked them, they weren't different enough to be worth the spend.
