I got the Shanling M1 in a previous drop, and within about 6 months, the battery exploded. Massdrop support pointed me at Shanling, and Shanling support was completely unresponsive after three attempts to contact them. So if you do get in on this, be aware that you may be left on your own if something goes wrong.
Photos of the ruptured battery on my M1 (swelling was so bad it broke through the back cover. Zero damage to the rest of the unit, so it wasn't dropped, crushed, or anything like that. https://imgur.com/a/NKBfgis

flarpThe same thing just happened to me with a Shanling M2s that I got through Massdrop last July. I took it on a flight last week and the battery swelled enough to pop the back off. The unit continued to play, but it is unusable now. What email address did you use to successfully contact them?

flarpIf you're interested in fixing your M1, Shenzhen Audio is the agent Shanling uses to provide replacement batteries: https://www.shenzhenaudio.com/shanling-m1-accessories-wheel-screen-bettery-for-m1-hifi-portable-mp3-player.html I got 2 replacement batteries for my M2s for $25 (free shipping). They take a while to get here from China (ordered on May 14th, delivered on June 8th) but I now have a working player again, with a spare battery to boot. Batteries even come with the double sided tape attached for sticking the to the back panel of the player.

This is a piece of GARBAGE. It's hard to turn on. Sometimes I have to fiddle with it for a very long time to just to get it to turn on. It often suddenly drops recognition of a micro-sd card that it's already using. I then have to take the card out, re-insert, and reboot. Also when the unit is charging, it's almost impossible to get it to play. You have to charge it fully and then unplug the usb cable before it will play. GARBAGE. With the money I've spent on lousy Chinese units like this, I could have bought a nice Sony. The problem is that all or most Sonys now available won't play from a memory card, and for me that's a deal breaker. So I remain a pathetic sucker, shelling out for one garbage Chinese unit after another until I find one that works....

I laughed out-loud!!! I'm not laughing at your misfortune and frustration, but it's just hilarious the way you worded it!

massdropper5Sounds like Sony picked up on the Apple strategy of big profit: storage. For years I've always said the best job in he word is the guy that runs the division in Apple responsible for storage on their mobile devices. Apple easily charges 3X+ over RETAIL for storage upgrades. I would guess Sony is doing the same.

I have one of these. It's nice, but I hate the UI. It takes a long time to navigate the menus, especially when you have a large music library.

wolf-mathIf you use the previous/next buttons on side of M2s, you can jump even through large library in seconds.

rpeeblesI'm pretty sure it does support AptX which can stream from tidal from a smartphone to the player. I think it's done through the Hiby Link software. Basically turning the device into a wireless dac/amp.

Got mine and sometimes when I turn on the screen, it states battery is low but a second or 2 later, it shows full battery or the correct battery level. However sometimes, even though I have full battery, it'll show the low battery notification then shut off. I can power it right back up and it'll show the full battery status. I don't mind the notification but I do mind that it sometimes completely shuts down the player. I listen to mostly EDM sets which are usually an hr+ which is very annoying when it completely shuts down and I lose my place in the mix. Anyone else experience the low battery notification when it's not valid?
*update* Emailed support and they gave me a link to firmware 3.4 which fixed the battery issue.

I've joined the drop. I already have one of these and I'm very happy with it. But then I use it in a very specific way, as a jukebox in my car. I have one large playlist named WRON for "Radio Ron" with everything I want to hear cherry picked from my collection on shuffle play. That's all I normally do with it. I will use the 2nd one in a similar way, to source my dining room/kitchen system (music to cook/eat/entertain with). I will also take it on vacation to drive my Soundmatters Foxl bluetooth speaker. It'll be a nice compact transportable system, and AptX to boot.
I think the scroll wheel is a bit tedious for moving through the long playlist, but I don't need to do it very often. For navigating my folders (Genre/Artist/Album) it's fine. I also think the scroll wheel is a potential point of mechanical failure but again, I don't use it much. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like touch sensitive controls (e.g., Cayin N3) as much, especially doing "no look" while driving.
I like the sound of the unit. I don't know if it's the AK4490 DAC I like the sound of, or the implementation, but it's a nice, full sound, detailed but not etched. It will drive the HD6XX adequately but I seldom use it that way as I don't consider the HD6XX portable. When I use it with my HD6XX, I run it line out into a Vali 2 running one of my 6F8G tubes to drive them and it sounds great.

Just get m0, best sound from all the Ms, powerful amp too, takes Pinnacle easy, sounds great with Audio Technika 50x, amazing with Dune 2000j. I have m1 but use it only as transport with Centrance DACportabl.

how is the bass on m0? is the sound more bright, warm or balanced?

blazer39For my taste it is very balanced, I am not a basshead but you can use EQ to adjust frequencies levels, again I do not use EQ:). As a summery, I tried all Ms, even bought M1 as transport (M0 was not produced yet) but love and listen as it is only M0 (besides other DAPs I own).
