To say that Shwood comes from humble beginnings would be an understatement. The company’s first pair of sunglasses was whittled by hand from the limb of a madrone tree. They were fitted with lenses purchased from a corner store, and finished with a set of rusty hinges from an old cabinet. That was 2009. Today, Shwood has replaced the pocket knife with a laser cutter. The lenses, though they’re still ground to spec in-house, hail from German manufacturer Carl Zeiss. And the home office? It’s still in Portland, Oregon, but it’s no longer a literal home. Some things never change, though. Like that first pair of Shwood shades, each pair today is made in Portland with the goal of showcasing the natural beauty of the materials.
Note: At checkout, choose the black/ebony frame with gray polarized lenses, the crystal/elm burl frame with G15 polarized lenses, or the dark forest/elm burl frame with gray polarized lenses.
Shwood’s flagship model, the Canby features a refined aesthetic and a classic wayfarer shape that looks great on most faces. The frame is made of premium Italian cellulose acetate and accented with hardwood inlays on the arms. Each pair is complete with five-barrel German hinges and polarized lenses.
