I have this soundbar in my living room and the sj9 in the guest room/office.
This soundbar does virtual atmos and try to hack your brain to recreate the effect. the effect is very dependent on your room and also of you measuring exactly the distance from where you sit to the soundbar and from where you sit to the subwoofer. also Measure your ceiling height.
place the subwoofer ideally between you and the bar if not possible place it next to the soundbar or next to your couch.
then play anything DTS:x or atmos by cranking the subwoofer up to 6 minimum and increase until the bass become imprecise and messy then notch it down
all of this makes a world of difference and I am puzzled that all those soundbar brands does not tell you this.
but let’s be clear if your room is open one side, if you ceiling it too high (>10ft), if your subwoofer does not have a straight line to you (furniture does not matter but walls does) then you lose the virtual effect

they absolutely *should* call it something else. but it's at least partially dolby's marketing that is to blame. it *is* dolby atmos. their virualization for headphones is fantastic, and I imagine it's also fantastic on soundbars. but they *should* insist on calling it something like "dolby atmos virtualization" on whatever products they license it for.

I agree except for the fact that Dolby has in fact certified this bar else they could not use the name.

P4PAG00NYou are getting this for the effect of a surround sound system with the convenience of a soundbar (that can easily be mounted to a wall).
That means yes you can get much better stereo sound from some cheap towers and a sub, but you pay for it with the footprint in your home.
and if you are comparing this to a cheaper soundbar like the samsung m360, don't .You might as well ask why one would spend 3k on a Q9 when I can get a westinghouse for 300.

This is a soundbar. It is by definition a compromise. Comments that detract from it for being a single box are unfair.
Not everyone's circumstances allow for a multi-box setup.
I would love a traditional surround sound system in my living room, but without the infrastructure I am not going to dive into that pit of cables.
As soundbars go, the HT-ST5000 is as good as they come. Reviews from What-HiFi, Sound&Vision and others are overwhelmingly positive.
Now I just need to talk my wife into getting one :D

TherocAgreed. I got this on the first drop here and love it. It won't re-create the 360 degree bubble the same way an Atmos multi-box setup will, but it does a great job with height and depth all the same. Not to mention the sub is incredible. This is as good as I think you'll find without jumping into a system of separate pieces.

I'm confused... this is being sold on Amazon for $1 less. What's the motivation to purchase it from here? The last drop was significant. This is the same as everywhere else... even less on Ebay.
