Such a stupid price. Pha3 is about $520 with official warranty in China. And both z5 and z7 are about $390 with official warranty in China. And these prices are stable for more than one year.
it's only S$999 here in Singapore... with official Sony warranty
This is cheaper than my employee store price! Very tempting.
I got this for $499 2 years ago enemy's it came out. Best sounding dap at that time but with the 1Z it's pretty useless.
I have it . It's amazing with ipod touch 2 and HD 650, but I don't know how it doesn't work with Opus#1
I scored this unit through my local Crai****** for $200! A week ago, I purchased the MDR Z7 and can vouch for its performance. It powers my HD800 with ease as well. I just wish this unit was priced for less than $500 so others could enjoy its wonderful sound.
Pha 3, 2 pha in price. Phphphph pha!
I'm usually not into price discussions, but this is crazy price for a DAC/amp that is over 3 years old, and has been only limited... by its poor availability in many markets. In Europe, we only got a butchered version without battery, but for 599$. To add more, the balanced output are not the most useful ones either for portable gear, and the amp is hardly portable either.
It's coming to Massdrop 3 years too late (with a 3-years old price)...
$725 is a fine price, but the PHA-3 has been usurped within Sony by the Asian-market PHA-2A (not to be confused with the PHA-2). The PHA-2A delivers roughly same specs as the PHA-3, but features the newer Sony proprietary 4.4mm balanced output. It also can be had for $450 on Amazon US, with free two day shipping. Honestly, even if the PHA-3 were $450, I think the PHA-2A is the better buy... I really like 4.4mm balanced.
Sitting in Starbuck's working in my MDR-Z7's, with SurfCables, and a Zorloo DAC... I am very tempted right now...
Very tempted...

sounds like some good problems!

It sure is buddy. I just purchased the little dot mk 2 and am enjoying it like crazy with my sony walkmanZX2, Fostex, Grados , hifiman , Sony's etc etc . Now rolling tubes. LOL it never ends. Just went on eBay looking at those Z7 s. I won't, wont I'm stronger than this..... LOL
FWIW, i currently own the PHA-1, and owned/sold the PHA-2. i love my PHA-1 and will probably never sell it (it was one of the first portable amps that would allow the bypassing of the iphone/ipod internal dac through the LOD), and the sound is really great. it pushes my hifiman he-500's well, and was my desktop setup at work several years ago. the price has def climbed a bit recently, and i cant speak to whether this is worth the money, but i had to give some love to its predecessors. very well made units, and i am happy with them!

Similar experience with the PHA-2, but I did just sell it due to owning an Axon 7 and the Sony amp collecting dust. The Axon sound quality is excellent.
The PHA-2 was EXTREMELY well made. One of the best portable audio devices I've ever owned, certainly from a build perspective. It sounded wonderful as well.
That being said, these things are expensive compared to other portable amps with similar performance (Mojo).
Do the balanced outputs really justify such a high price? Battery life seems kind of meh for actually using the DAC. I just got the Topping NX4 and although I haven't had a great deal of time with it, I'm thinking it was a good move. It's a portable DAC/AMP with a 12 hour DAC + AMP battery life (36 Hr with AMP only). Sounds great so far and feels like a really solid, well-built piece of engineering.
It would make a good Massdrop actually. In the meantime I'd check it out over this if you're in the market for something around a bill and not $724.99.

Hmm, I can see that.
Personally, when I'm out and about, there's usually a lot of noise either from wind or people or classes around me, etc. It makes it difficult to appreciate my music beyond a certain level. I think I would only spring for that 98th percentile when it comes to the home, because I just don't think any of my mobile situations would lend themselves to truly appreciating it. I also think that Sony is one of the best in audio and usually overlooked by a lot of people. Unfortunately their high-end stuff is usually too expensive for me.
Sythrix
Definitely... I think the 90th percentile is good enough for most of us... Enjoy the 90th percentile for a few years, and when you have the funds and the time, upgrade! The progression is half the fun... And I also agree about Sony being overlooked... Which is kind of hilarious considering they invented DSD and high-res audio... We can all thank Sony for where audio is today.
Sony engineers should get their asses whipped for releasing a product with a price tag this high. ifi dsd bl beats this out of the water for half the price. Oh, did I forget to mention that it also has way lower noise floor and higher resolution?

I only tested the black label. Not the original idsd. I used my ie800s, HD800S, and Z1R.
It's roughly the same size as the PHA3.
Just like most things Sony makes, overpriced!
- Price too high compared to other sites - Not really portable, rather big (obviously that is subjective), battery life could be better. - Nice: the balanced option. - Audioquest Dragonfly Red much cheaper, much more portable (no balanced though).

I agree.
But I already own too much of this stuff already. Once you go down the rabbit hole... :-)
So will take a pass.

Seems not a so good deal
Someone needs to make a USB type c native dac/amp already damn it!
If I already have the FiiO X7, and LH Geek Out V2, will the PHA-3 be considered an upgrade? I am already amassing a collection of balanced headphones and it would be awesome to have an all in one solution that works with everything.
so whats the word on the street, are these pretty good? Thanks in advance! I would be importing these into canada so I am probably gonna be paying through the nose for tax as well lol.
RedJohn456
It depends. you really need to hear this. I have 2 setups I use for my PC audio. One is this, and the other is a mojo with ifi audio itube2 and ican SE. all 3, can be replaced with this one box. but if you already have a good DAP, then likely you probably won't need this, unless you're not happy with the sound from your X7. But note that this balanced solution is not the same as the usual. It's 2x 3.5mm SE plugs. Only Sony cables have this, or some other aftermarket builders.
How much better will the DAC sound from iphone compared to the 3.5 mm audio out from the iPhone? Would just an amplifier be just as good?
Does the current offer (MAR 2016) come with the stock balanced cables that work with its balanced outputs? Has anyone used this unit with the Beyerdynamic T1 Gen 2 using the balanced cables? Are the stock Sony balanced cables for this unit compatible with the T1 Gen 2 without any modifications? Thanks!
AustringerGuy
The Headphone Cables are not included, and just to confirm, the balanced cables are a 3.5 Jacks (L/R) and the only headphones where i could use the balanced output were the Sony MDR-Z7 which come with the Balanced 3.5 to 3.5 Cables. If the BD T1 has 3.5mm Jacks on its balanced cables, it will work. (then again the Dac does only come with the "backside" Cables)
AustringerGuy
These cable you need is the same as for the Pono. I am using the balanced out with the Cardas a8 and am pleased.
has this version got a battery?

I believe so. The US version has a battery and this one lists a 15 hour recharge time.
This is the standard PHA-3. It is self powered. The 5V DC in is only for charging.
Do not buy pha-3 from massdrop its not cheap and its made in china. they should inform that its china domestic only before i purchase. built quality is just not there. if you seen pha-3 japan version you know it straight away. this is my review of purchase from massdrop. do not buy from here. you will be pissed off.
