To get the most out of your audio, one pair of headphones simply won’t do. Of course, where you listen makes a big impact on how you listen: You wouldn’t listen to open-back headphones on a crowded train; likewise, you wouldn’t use your noise-canceling headphones in the comfort of your room Read More

Just a few notes, the 6xx needs over 100+ hrs of burn in otherwise it'll be extremely lack luster. Otherwise, its great. The Sony's detail is lacking, definitely not something any audiophile could be satisfied with considering the 350 retail price tag. It's detail is actually a touch worse than my well burnt in Sen 558's, which i got for $80. The Noise canceling is amazing on it though. Just make sure if you get this drop, you understand that the Sony's should only be owned with a priority on noise cancellation. If blocking out strong noise is needed, then this is a good deal. I just moved from the Sony's to the Bose 700's because the bose offers similar noise cancellation quality but with sound an audiophile can be satisfied with. Need to burn the 700's in more, but so far they're falling inbetween my 1more quads and etymotic er4-xr's in terms of detail.

It's been 9 months since I've listened to the T60, but what I can say for sure is that the bass extends lower, and it has way more slam. It's much wider, eliminates the treble peaks, and the larger pads lessens the creaky nature of T60. The Argons also change the baffles to 90% closed, to they isolate better as well.

Insanely good drop price. The 1000XM3 will educate you on just how important the quality of your listening environment is. No one would bat an eye at me telling you that the sound quality on the HD650/HD6XX is superior, especially with the correct amp/DAC... what you might bat an eye at is me telling you that as soon as you have any sort of background noise at all, the 1000XM3 wins. 1000XM3: I have almost nothing bad to say about these cans. The battery life is great, the recharge speed is first-in-class, the sound quality is fantastic, and the noise cancelling is superb. I have medium+ sized ears, and they just fit comfortably into these. If they were any bigger, I might have issues. So, if you have large ears, go find a pair of these to try on (my Best Buy always has some out to try) to make sure you won't have issues. I also get a some hot spots on the crown of my head if I position these wrong and wear them for a long (6+ hours) time. I wish they had bluetooth 5, but I digress. HD 6XX: I have both the original HD650 and a pair of HD6XX, don't ask why (it was mostly for comparison purposes, my HD6XX were from the first batch). They're essentially the same. The following comments are based on the HD650 and not the 6XX... because I had those first and so they've remained my primary pair of earphones. Again, they're essentially the same. These NEED an amp. They also strongly benefit from a DAC, but they're power hungry so they really NEED an amp. My portable FiiO E17 Alpen can barely drive them adequately, and docking that to the Fiio E09K vastly improves the sound quality. I don't typically drive these with that amp setup though, my home setup is a Maverick Audio Tube Magic D1 DAC (not the tube pre-amp, just the straight DAC out) to a Bottlehead Crack (with Speedball, tube rolled). This setup sounds absolutely glorious, Sennheiser cans were made for tubes, I swear. The HD6XX are some of the most comfortable headphones I've ever owned. Some complain about the clamp force, and I actually didn't like it when I first got them, either. But, I left them stretched out over a wadded up blanket overnight to stretch out the spring a bit and now I love them (they're still tighter than most of my other cans, but not too tight). I'm super surprised with their velour ear cups; it's been almost five years and they show almost zero signs of flattening or wearing out. I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT990 PROs (my work headphones) that see about the same amount of use, and they've gone through four pairs of velour ear cups in that same time, and their clamp force is almost nothing. The ear cups on the HD650/6XX are large enough that even those with the largest ears should have no trouble finding comfort. The headband is squishy in all the right places, too. This is already exhaustively long so I'll cut it off, I just wanted to express my envy for those that pick up this fantastic Drop deal. I paid... nearly this much for just the 1000XM3s alone. Edit: I typed HD600 in all of the places for some reason, I meant HD650. I regularly use the HD650 and that's what the 6XX are based on, not the 600.

I've heard "DAP" used before, but realistically I just refer to them as MP3 players most of the time, because that's what we called them when I was in high school 15 years ago. I don't have any experience with trying to run my HD650 cans off of any sort of portable player, they sit at home with their permanent setup. I've traveled with my BD DT990pro, and even though they are 250 ohms, a cell phone can drive them well enough to not hate it (but they still really benefit from an amp). This exact drop makes that a nearly irrelevant discussion, though. If someone wants to travel with one of the pairs of headphones they buy from this drop, it's going to be the 1000XM3 99.99% of the time. I don't use any portable music players anymore, it's easier to dedicate the equivalent space in my bag to an extra 10,000 mAh battery pack so I can just recharge my phone if I'm running low on battery. I was resistant to converting to the all-in-one phone lifestyle, but it got me eventually.
Jorf88The first MP3 players from Creative and... Rio? came out while I was in high school too, though I was just a freshman. I would know exactly what you mean if you mentioned an MP3 player, though we don’t put MP3’s in them anymore. PMP and DAP seem good, it looks like DAP is winning the popularity contest but I think DAP sounds close to DAC and could be confusing. Oh well! Personally, I’ve enjoyed going back to an MP3 player-like experience. I did the all-in-one lifestyle, but my phone of choice is limited by internal-storage only, no headphone jack, it’s constantly spammed with only mildly important notifications, and I keep using all the battery in my phone before the day is up. Meanwhile, there are good DAPs that give desktop-level experiences and can go anywhere I like, and provide a good music source at home for my desk or living room speakers (or the same at friends/family) without needing me to turn on a computer or dedicate my phone to the task. I can sit in my living room, my DAP connected with optical out to my stereo, while I work from home texting colleagues (WhatsApp) and doing design work on my iPad. Or listen to headphones on the back porch, or bring my whole library with me on the plane for an exciting “shuffle.” You’re right though, with this Drop it will mostly be Sennheiser at home and Sony in the go, because those are optimized for each of those situations. I like that my DAP (currently a Sony) can send LDAC, instead of my phone’s SBC.

Interesting. Wouldnt it have made more sense to wait for the Drop THX headphone to be released and pair the HD6xx with it? Still an interesting idea for people who want a portable and home use headphone. Id like to see bundles like this but a headphone, amp, and dac.

Vastly over-rated? Why?
HughSBReasons why the HD 650/6XX is over-rated:
  • Model/design was released in the early 2000's. (Nostalgia goggles!)
  • Almost entirely plastic build.
  • Lackluster detail retrieval.
  • A 'warm and dark' sound signature is not realistic in the slightest.
  • Non-existent sub-bass.
  • The sound signature offers rich, forward vocals... and not much else. (Certainly not good for detail/bass-rich music genres... or FPS gaming.)
  • Proprietary, double-sided earcup connections.
  • Balanced cable not included.
  • Substantial amplifier power is required to attain the headphones' full potential... or to come anywhere close. (Not just any cheap/weak amplifier will suffice.)
  • Cannot be used effectively portably, especially with phones (sound leakage, power requirements, long cable, does not fold, etc.)
  • Tight clamping force.
  • Proprietary attachment for the earpads. (Cannot use the numerous, inexpensive 'lip-grip' earpads, such as the standard oval Brainwavz pads.)
  • Massdrop and Sennheiser even undercut this model with the HD 58X Jubilee, which is $60 cheaper and offers more bass response.
  • After selling so well, Massdrop's $20 price increase is a petty move.
  • Other headphones do not have this many limitations... and in some cases, are less expensive... even if you have to exchange their stock pads.

Will Sony honor the warranty? I've heard they are pretty strict when it comes to unauthorized dealers?
Per the drop page Sony Limited 1 year warranty so it is covered. Just because a manufacturer doesn't appear on the website doesn't mean you don't have a warranty. If you are really concerned then email them to validate. I've not seen MD/Drop list manufacturers coverage incorrectly.

A better deal yet would be to bundle two Sennheiser headphones, such as the HD6XX and the PXC550 (or the HD58X and the PXC550). Another bundle alternative would be the Momentum 2 Around Ear Bluetooth Wireless (AEBT). In all cases, since the Momentum 2 and the PXC550 are very good headphones but at the same time they have been around for a couple of years, then the bundle could be priced a bit lower: let’s say 350$ for the 6XX/550 or even 300$ for the 58X/550. Replacing the PXC by the Momentum 2 over ear Wireless would probably trigger similar bundle prices, maybe 25$ more at most. In my opinion, these two noise cancelling closed headphones are very good and may sustain comparison with the Sony’s, at a far better price. The Momentum 2 AEBT has slightly better sound, the 550 is a better travel all rounder phone, but both headphones, while not necessary better than the Sony on all grounds, are very satisfying alternatives. I must note that own and I appreciate all of aforementioned headphones (HD58X/HD6XX/PXC550/Momentum2 AEBT). This would be a very good Drop/Sennheiser collaboration and would promote the two Sennheiser noise cancellers while new models (Momentum 3 AEBT and something that could be called like a PXC600) are probably on drawing boards or prototype being tested at Senn’s headquarters... (I have no evidence but I may only presume it is the case)

the WH1000XM3 is a v shape with treble roll off passed 12k and the PCX550 is a neutral-ish with peaky treble and quite a lot of bass roll off. So it comes down to what sound signature you prefer but the Sony does have slightly less THD. In basically every other aspect the Sony trumps the Sennheiser so I still think the XM3s are a better pair of headphones. Also you can adjust the ANC level on the XM3s.

Ares78I fully agree on one thing you just said: it comes down to what sound signature you prefer. Sonys are good headphones, but I happen to prefer the Senns. Moreover I prefer the sound of the Momentum/HD1 over ear wireless to the PXC550 or any of the Bose and Sonys. I haven’t heard the new Bose 700 though. But the Momentums are not as « portable » as the PXC and have two big disadvantages: the ANC is not adjustable and you cannot shut off the ANC in active mode. The only way to use them without ANC is in passive mode, bluetooth shut off with the cable. I generally prefer the sound of the Momentum but I prefer the PXC550 overall for portable use. Both the Bose 35 II and the Sony XM3 are good headphones I admit, just not my preference. By the way, I listen to sound and music, not to THD or response specs. I wouldn’t choose any of these headphones based on specs, preferably on sound and features. And yes the XM3 is a good overall sounding and well featured headphone. Just not my preference for an ANC bluetooth portable headphone. I’m glad to hear that the XM3 has a variable adjustment for ANC. I like the ANC feature and the advantage it produces on a headphone in a given environment, but for me, my rule is the lesser the ANC the better the sound experience. That is why I use the ANC of my PXC550 at the 12% level (the lowest setting), except when I’m on a plane or other very loud environment where I may use the maximum setting. I would not hesitate to recommend the XM3 to a friend, made this be clear.

Actually, the perfect pair would be the HE-4XX and the Bose QC35's--I know 'cause I got 'em ;- )

RayFMY problem with the QC 35's is they give me headaches form the ANC and lots of other people too. Apparently the 700's don't.

Ehhhh, I mean....the Senn's are okay, but color the audio quite a bit. I'd be all over this if there was a Beyerdynamic team up or something.

I have to admit, going from the crazy over expression of treble on the Koss clips back to the HD 660S’, I was left wanting... Now using them as they are without the inner foams, I find them to be incredibly natural sounding as I described before. They definitely aren’t the leader on soundstage, but to me they lead in reproduction where it matters. I would like something with a little more sub bass and treble as a part of my collection, but it’s hard to tell which direction I should go. I think my next upgrade will either be planars or Focal Clears are on my mind, considering their brighter sound signature and great reputation. Knowing that “bright” headphones *can* be surprisingly pleasant from the signature of the Koss is leading me in that direction. I think I mentioned the Koss being surprisingly not harsh for their cost and signature, but not having excessively incredible detail in that area. That’s where the concept of Focal’s comes in for me. I hope to demo some soon, but I won’t rush anything since if I’m making a $1500 jump I want to make sure the sound signature is something I’m going to enjoy for *most* things. I don’t want it to be 80% Senns and 20% Focals if that’s makes sense. I would rather the majority of my spending go to function and practicality. on the other hand, I’m also interested in other options that I haven’t considered for genre-specific cans. I’d like to expand my collection

No doubts, actually to me the only Beyers I'd own are the DT880s, the others are screechy. But for some listening have a flat profile is big. With headphones you are left trying to basically recreate 3 driver types off a single driver. So you have to accept compromises. I apologize for getting a little hasty with my reply.

Just did my own preferred “open & closed” bundle recently..the Massdrop HD58X ($150 with $20 off coupon & ST) & PXC 550 ($86 factory refurb). Both for $236. PS: I actually have a third Sennheiser. The 4.50 BTNC, for $61 (also a factory refurb) for rougher use; in gym workouts. 3 Sennheisers for under $300 ($297), is NOT BAD at all.

Really pretty solid start IMO and I own the HD650 and MDR-1000x that the headphones in this bundle were based on. The ES100 is an amazing piece of kit for the money.

ElectronicVicesI totally agree with the ES100. Quite versatile to use..and it shines on either the AR E10 (gave away the E100 as a gift) or the HD58X. Sounds great with the PXC 550 as well (AAC via my 8 Plus), in passive mode (on full battery discharge).

KevinI have both the 6XX and the 1000XM3 - bought separately at discounted price. I think $400 for the bundle is a very good price. While the 6XX is good for home use, I found the XM3 very useful on long flights (12+ hour flight). No more ear fatigue when I get off from the plane after long flights. The XM3's noise cancellation is that good, much better than the Bose equivalent. The sound quality of XM3 is decent. I pair the XM3 with FiiO M9 for Hi-Res playback or plug-in directly from the airplane's headphone jack to watch in-flight movies (with excellent noise cancellation!).
