Product Description
Since 1990, the Endura has been an EDC staple—and for good reason. For one, it was among the first affordable pocket knives that could be opened with one hand, even with gloves Read More
This is san-mai or 'three layers' blade, which is a technique for adding strength while reducing the risk of breaking under hard use. It is accomplished by cladding a central hard steel in a softer more flexible steel. In this case, the centre is VG10 and the cladding is 'damascus'—two steels layered and folded.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is some damascus uses a dye or a specific etching to make the layers darker to stand out more. The more subtle damascus simply relies on the texture of the etch, but others i've seen seem to enhance the contrast with a dye or something. That may be the case here.
The outer 15 layers are Ni/stainless steel, not carbon steel. This VG10 core with outer layers of Ni/stainless is used in many high end kitchen knives.
ponagathosI think it looks great. I'm imagining that after heat-anodizing the titanium scales and fitting it with one of those great looking signet rings from the wise men you would have a very attractive knife. It will be hard to resist getting in on this.
I don't understand the benefit of getting this knife from this site. The price is no better than the everyday price from several websites all of which have it in stock now, and will ship it much faster than Drop. There used to be a benefit from getting it from this site (better price, special edition, etc.). I'm just not seeing that lately. Am I missing something?
BoringEsq"Am I missing something?"
Yes, you and I and the rest are missing deals... good deals that once were found on a website called "Massdrop." That site no longer exists.
This is a pass for me. The Endura with a VG-10 blade can be had for under $80. I wouldn't buy it for looks because it's ugly. I think that I have this in plain VG-10. I do have it in ZDP-189. Caviar emptor.
Here could be a dumb question...
What kind of steel is Damascus? Is it a mix of VG10, D2, 440, or is is just random steel folded? Seems to me Damascus steel would be awesome a few centuries ago, but now with metal science is just optics...right?
TortoiseThunderThe core is VG10 and the 'damascus' cladding is usually a nickel steel like 15N20 folded/layered with something like a SUS410 or SUS420.
