Product Description
Featured in The Wall Street Journal, Men's Health, and Esquire, the Standard Razor Set is engineered to give you the shave of your life. Machined from aircraft-grade aluminum, the double-edge razor comes equipped with a 5-pack of Astra blades, considered one of the smoothest, closest-cutting blades on the market Read More
LuvMyJimmyIt is a feature. In the event that the screw wears over the years, it is easily replaced in the Standard razor with this, more expensive, construction. Another razor you would have to throw when something goes wrong with the screw.
I love the Merkur Futur. It's the least aggressive razor I own (and is adjustable if you like it more aggressive) and its significant weight makes it easier to use than my Merkur HD. The only downside is the big head, which makes shaving under the nose a bit tricky as well as a precision trim around the sideburns. Still my favorite from the ones I own (Merkur 34 HD, Merkur 37C slant, Merkur Futur, Weber DLC), although I wouldn't mind advice for a good slant razor. The Merkur 37C is a too inconsistent for me (one side is more aggressive than the other). Merkur quality control isn't always great I hear so it may be just mine.
I also use the Feather blades with them. Extremely sharp, so take care with your technique if you're new to DE shaving. For a beginner I would suggest getting a blade sampler pack, available at many webshops, so you can try multiple brands. Try each one for a week or so to give yourself time to adjust. Blades can be a very personal thing so don't be afraid to compare them.
PeasI have not tried this specific razor, but a double-edged (DE) razor is definitely the way to go. They give me great shaves and the blades are very affordable. Combine them with good shaving cream, preferably with a badger brush although a good canned foam is still a better option than the stuff you'll find in supermarkets, and you'll get smoother shaves for less.
It'll take a few months to get used to the technique, for example you'll need to use far less pressure than a cartridge razor. I would suggest starting with these 'Getting started' video's by DE expert Mantic59: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2DB6D82F52BA7608
Another good beginner's razor is the Merkur 34C (also known as the Merkur HD), which is about $38 and well regarded. This Standard looks a bit nicer though (I hope the black doesn't wear off), and the included stand is a nice touch.

Black Standard razor, Elizabeth Street Shave Cream 2 oz, Two 5-packs Razor Blades, 3.5 oz Gentleman Jon Alum Block, 12" x 24" Barber Towel . All for $45 with joining the club, $55 without.
This is a razor that is not on any of the suppliers lists on not on any wet shave sites. I would go with a known entity such as the Feather or Ikon which were both featured in the last 2 razor drops. I just received my Ikon OSS from Massdrop and it has become my number one go to after the first shave. The workmanship is a sight to behold, it's 100% stainless steel and it's a US product.
Consistent quality with these razors is dubious at best....MADE IN CHINA....you may get a razor that is "mild" and someone else may get a razor that is "aggressive".....you get what you pay for. Invest in a high quality STAINLESS STEEL" razor and you'll have it forever.
Solli, this is a forum for people that are exploring a new purchase and for many their first foray into wet shaving. MassDrop is also a way to get from basic to better for a few bucks more, not a soapbox.
So far as the high resale on fleabay, Wolfman Razors is a one machinist operation run out of a small town outside of Edmonton Alberta Canada. and his razors really are a piece of art. Everything he makes can be customized from finish to blade exposure. The man is a true craftsman and due to extremely high demand there is a ridiculous backlog. People always want what they can't have so prices skyrocket, kinda like scalping tickets for playoff games. If he ever decides to trust another machinist with his "baby" he may catch up. This man is putting craft ahead of profit. The razor heads are $175 Canadian and looking at the detail consume a fair bit of labour. Journeyman machinists time doesn't come cheap, as well there is the design and functionality to factor in. I've been a tradesman all of my life and I know that this is real value. If a person redirected their entertainment "allowance" they may be able to buy an instrument that would last a lifetime and even become an heirloom.
beasThank you for your thoughtful comments. Based on that, I shall be looking towards a wolf man. I have a feather which I paid heaps for and some merkurs. I prefer slant razors.
I would see this china made product to be around 30$.
Don't get me wrong, im not saying it's a bad razor. I'm just really sceptical since the manufacturer isn't well known and doesn't give the proper info about the product.
Maybe the scatching is a bit reaching, but many everyday aluminium products tend to look awful after some time. lol maybe this chinase anodizing is 9 on moths scale, you guys be careful not to scrach your ceramic sink with it
KovaLuuChina has good quality manufacturing as well as poor, it depends what you pay for and they have a good reputation now for metal products as very few other places in the world still actually have the skills to manufacture it.
It's also an incredibly simple product, you would have to be majorly incompetent to make something unusable. Say what you want about brands, but the reason people like these razors is simplicity and that really makes brand name quality very variable.
You would probably be surprised what products are aluminium, I doubt you would be able to tell the difference most of the time, processing makes a much bigger difference. At this price even your bog standard merkur is going to be made out of pretty low quality steel.
Just a quick update for the group. We were informed by our warehouse that the razor set has arrived earlier today. However, given the blizzard, our warehouse guys will not be able to take care of this shipment until Wednesday.
We apologize for the untimely delay for the shipment. We'll get cracking on this as soon as the weather condition improves.
Thanks for your patience and expect an update from us on 1/30 or sooner.
Our logistics team has passed along updates from our distribution center almost immediately after getting them; I understand the frustration over a delay, but please understand that large storms are outside of our control and that we do everything we can to keep our drop participants informed. Please refer to our FAQ for information on what to expect after joining your first drop: https://www.massdrop.com/faq
IanAndersonThese are probably the same people who bitch about a crappy airline when they flights are delayed because a tornado is passing by the airport.
Emailed support two days ago, still waiting on a response. I have yet to receive anything at all. No shipping notification, no blades, no razor. I'd rather not have to go through my credit card company, but at this point I'm getting fed up with waiting. I've been patient until this point but am feeling like it's a lost cause now. Unfortunately a very negative first experience here on Massdrop.
My second order for the Standard now placed. I have come to learn that it is indeed a super thing to behold. Thoroughly recommended and if there was a suggestion that it might be slippery in the hand, then be informed that practice has shown that this is, without doubt, not remotely the case. Glad it's back on offer. Thanks to whoever arranged it.
