Do both models have the declination adjustment?

Crookies"I sent a note to Suunto about the red characters fading unreadably off my Suunto and they never replied but you might want to send them a note about what they mean by "declination correction" as it might not be what you are expecting. It may be more of a dial compensation which is not a magnetic adjustment. The magnetic adjustments are more idiot proof than rotating the bezel within the compass.

CrookiesYes, they have the declination correction and imho it's the best design on the market. There's a tiny screw on the back of the housing that drives a gear, rotating the inner housing - it keeps its setting no matter how rough you are with the unit. You can see the little silver screwdriver tool on the lanyards in the photos. I like this design much better than what Brunton has designed. MasterRo, not sure what you mean by "magnetic adjustment" for declination...needle points to magnetism obviously, and the adjustment is simply made to the bezel - you either shift the housing via a mechanism for a "permanent" adjustment or you do it manually each and every time you set a new position. If there's something else on the market that I'm not aware of, then pardon my ignorance there. For your faded markings, you can probably get a replacement unit, but you'll have to contact Forestry Suppliers in Jackson, MS. They are the sole warranty contact in the US now. Contacting Suunto is a hassle these days and they will simply redirect you to Forestry Suppliers. The kicker is that if they don't happen to stock your unit, you may have to choose an alternate model (if there is nothing comparable they may upgrade you within reason)...easy to work with but it's a strange situation compared to how it used to be when dealing with Suunto directly. Many years ago Suunto replaced one of mine that lost its ink and one rubber pad had gone soft & crumbly, but I think they've tightened up their replacement policy a little. You will need to mail them your old compass.

CrookiesThank you for your reply. I am not sure of the physics of how the declination adjustment works, but it sounds like you are. If you are turning, what looks like a screw, then you are choosing the right compass with the best declination adjustment I know of. Thank you for the details about Forestry Suppliers.

CrookiesNot sure what you mean by both models. The model I have, has, what I would call, a declination compensation. It does not have the screw like you re familiar with, only a bezel that turns so the compensation is manual and cognitive. I contacted Forestry Suppliers with a photo of the red lettering coming off, per their request, and never heard back from them even after a second email. The photo also showed an air bubble with the compass inner fluid. Feeling a bit dead in the water on that item with Suunto and their distributor.

MasterRoTry calling them instead of emailing...that 800 number is on their website...and just tell them you are interested in Suunto warranty replacement. They'll transfer you to the girl who handles all of that (may need to leave a voicemail but she'll call you back if so). It was definitely not the smoothest process but they were very friendly and pretty prompt about things for me. Much easier when you could deal with Suunto directly. If you still get no response from them, just call or email Suunto and tell them...they'll do whatever needs to be done. Sure makes you appreciate the stellar customer service from many of our other outdoor gear companies, doesn't it!
